This was our first walk/hike and we found this place on a whim. Best idea we have had so far. It was so peaceful and so beautiful, if you have ever seen Fern Valley as a child it looks exactly like that!
There is no entrance but there is a parking fee of £3.50 for 3 hours, which isn’t too bad. There are also a variety of walks you can do. There is even a special one which is suitable for children, prams and some wheelchairs. We chose the Red route, this one does a small circle around the mill, and it is 3 miles (5km). There are longer or shorter routes available. Oh and if you want to do the Red route we suggest you start with the hills first and walk back through the river, more enjoyable. When you reach Gibson Mill there is a cafe where you can get a hot drink and just across the river (over the stepping stones) a great picnic area. It is a good idea to get a small picnic together. The way back goes right by the river and it is fantastic, it’s a straight road so after a tiring uphill climb it’s a welcome relief. Beware that special shoes are a must. Even if it isn’t raining the water runs downhill and there are some pretty muddy patches.
We had a fantastic time. Working and living in London and hubbie working as an engineer we, like most city people, don’t get out much into nature except Hyde Park. This sort of walk charges you back up!
