My mom and I did a trip around Tuscany by train in October and found that our "spur-of-the-moment" spontaneity wasn't always in our favour when using public transport. Hence, the day we had a route planned out ahead of us, the last thing we contemplated were worker strikes and ultimately being held up in a little town we had expected only to be a transfer stopover...but the next train never came. Nor did any buses. Infact, that day, unless we deliberately tried to call up a taxi, we weren't going anywhere, and this is what we like to call...fate! Fate led us to find this beautiful hotel with antique tuscan charm. Perched up on the hill top in the historic centre of Certaldo (which can be reached from the municiple centre by cable-car/tram) and overlooking the beautiful countryside, you will find Il Castello. Alfredo and his team will make you feel as comfortable as possible, ever so helpful and kind. If you choose to eat at the restaurant which I highly recommend, you must try the Truffle Risotto! Best we had on our trip. The historic centre itself is so peaceful and in autumn the colours of the changing leaves only flattered the stunning views even more.
Certaldo is a lovely little town situated somewhere between Florence and Sienna. Do yourselves a favour and add it to your itinerary - it is well worth it!

The only reason we put "only" Very Good, is because we did not stay there. It was fully booked at the time so Alfred found us another place where we stayed for three weeks. We ate at the restaurant many times, and enjoyed it immensely, as well as the charming bar that Alfredo runs. He was such a wonderful, informative and helpful person. We stayed just a few steps from the Albergo Il Castello, and spoke with him daily. The building is many hundreds of years old and restored. We toured the hotel rooms and they are charming, recently remodeled. We regularly visited with several his his guests who return year after year and their fondness for Alfred, the restaurant and the hotel, speaks volumes. If he treats his real guests just half as good as he treated us, they are in for a treat.

Room Tip: One that has been remodeled, they all will be soon. Some have views of the Midievil Village, and oth...

We had our wedding lunch at the restaurant of Albergo Il Castello with 40 friends and family and it was an absolute dream. I had been in regular contact with Alfred for many months leading up to the event and he was always fantastically helpful. The food was wonderful, I would highly recommend the Ravioli and the Roast Piglet. The wedding cake (from the bakers down in Certaldo) was fantastic. It is such a beautiful setting and perfect for a lunch. We had antipasti and prosecco out in the courtyard and then sat on one long table under the covered terrace. The restaurant supplied beautiful flowers for the table and with unlimited house wine included what more could you want?!

This charming small hotel is situated in Certaldo Alto, the medieval hilltop town that overlooks its younger, and less interesting neighbour Certaldo. Our room had spectacular views across the Tuscan countryside. The rooms are being upgraded and we stayed in one of the older doubles. It was basic with old furniture, but the en suite shower room, although dated, was clean and the shower was good. The all important A/C was efficient, if a little noisy. Continental breakfast is taken on one of many pretty terraces where you can eat, drink, sunbathe or just chill and soak up the atmosphere. The funicular cable car that runs between old and new Certaldo is less than a minute's walk and although fully automated is easy to use. There are several restaurants/cafes within easy walking distance and many places of interest tucked away in the cobbled streets and squares. Overall, extremely good value, great personal service and charming location.
