“My wife and I would like to visit again”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 1, 2013

My wife and I visited in September 2013. We really liked this place. One of our all time favorites. We had the Ecolodge pick us up in Granada and take us to the property. I am glad we did as the property would be hard to find on your own. The cabins are wonderful. They overlook the lodges private beach. There are no real walls so when you sleep at night you can hear the waves crashing the entire night. So wonderful. My wife and I live at the beach at home and have never experienced nature such as this. The bed is great and you have an additional hammock swing bed and a huge couch. All of which to doze off and relax. There is a big swimming pool by the restaurant and we swam every day. There is a tour office onsite and we took advantage of it. They took us on a nature walk to see the sloths, howler monkeys, and iguanas. They took us to go ziplining. They took us to the beach one night to see the baby turtles hatching and going to the sea. They took us the following to see momma laying her egss on the beach. Our tour guide was Bismar. These tours were great and really inexpensive. We walked the beach every morning and found beautiful sea shells. The food is amazing. We had a package that included breakfast and dinner. They cook you anything you want and it is wonderful. My wife and I are very picky. We just eat to stay alive, we don't live to eat. We ate both of our meals every single day. The whole vibe here is totally cool. Relaxation is off the chart. I see some people say it is expensive. My wife and I purchased an offseason package room, breakfast, and dinner and I am thinking it is a steal. They transferred us to the airport in Managua and did a great job. I asked them if during the offseason I could spend a month there. They thought I was kidding. I was serious. P.S. Some of the best surf beaches on the planet a 3 km away. Like I said this place is in my top 10 in the world. Thanks. Richard.

Thank you for your post, Richard! We would love to have you over for a month. You wouldn´t be the first guest to do so. It seems you took our advise of relaxing and getting disconnected to another level. Good for you!

We treated ourselves to one night at Morgan's Rock near SJDS. The price was pretty outrageous but the attentive staff and the ridiculously cool tree houses every guest stays in made up for it for the most part.

The rooms are truly incredible with a fabulous bed and shower; not to mention the view. The service was impeccable and they all spoke English beautifully and were willing to cater to everything we needed. You almost forgot what country you are in - which was almost unfortunate!

One small complaint was that we signed up for morning kayaking - a supposed 1.5 hr tour through a river inlet. Our guides were very sweet young students we believe, who unfortunately didn't know a lot about the plants and animals we were seeing. Also, the kayak was only about 30 minutes long. Still a lovely way to start the morning but not worth the $10 US charge.
Also, we were told via a brochure in room that they would wake us up if requested to see the turtles lay eggs on the beach at night. But we were told this was not possible during our visit as its not the time for them. However, the next morning, there were eggs from a turtle from overnight!

Finally, the food was quite good but not amazing. Maybe we expected too much with the price, but we had had some better meals at other, much cheaper places in town.

The pool is idyllic and like a dream come true. The beach is amazing but a little buggy at this time of year.

Overall a beautiful place for travelers looking for luxury but slightly overpriced in our eyes.

Thank you for your post. The tree house comparison is right on, with a touch of luxury mixed with authentic furniture. We´re sorry you were not woken up to see the hatching, and we had more hatching's the days following your check out. We will take your comments to improve our services and hope you can come back soon.

The location is stunning: private beach, gorgeous rooms, beautiful pool area. The lodge is about 20 minutes outside San Juan del Sur and not far from Playa Maderas - a popular surf beach.

What surprised me was the service. We were not high-maintenance guests but each request seemed to be met with confusion or a general lack of helpfulness. Language barriers weren't an issue as I speak both Spanish and English.

The lodge book lists a ton of great activities that can be arranged while you're there yet when we tried to actually book something we were met with blank stares. We asked to do a surf trip. When the one company the lodge must work with said they couldn't accmodate us the staff shrugged their shoulders and said it couldn't be arranged. So instead we asked for a taxi to San Juan del Sur and we ended up surfing with Casa de Oro for $10/person. It was great and way cheaper than what the lodge would have arranged! Even asking for a ride to town was met with resistance. They said they didn't have a driver available but didn't want to call a taxi from town for us. It was strange.

We asked about turtle tours. The staff said there were no eggs on the property. So we asked about going to La Flor Nature Reserve and they said it was really far away and didn't know when their tours were. (La Flor isn't that far away).

The also had a 9th anniversary party while we were there. Dinner was a buffet of what I would call appetizers (fried shrimp, plantain chips and dip, etc.). However, our prepaid rate had dinner as an appetizer, main course and dessert. I finally asked for the dinner menu which we then ordered from but I think the staff assumed the buffet was going to be it for the night. Not for the prices we were paying!

Overall, it is a beautiful place but if you go do your research on the things you'd like to do. Perhaps most people come here and don't leave the property but it shouldn't be such a hassle to explore your surroundings. We ended up hiring a local taxi driver to take us to our next destination vs. arranging through the lodge. He charged us a lot less and I felt better about the money going to him to support his family.

Thank you for your comments on setting, bungalows, beach and pool area. Those areas definitely are stunning. We do apologize for the communication inconveniences that occurred during you stay. It seems there was miscommunication on the back end, and we will certainly work on this to avoid miscommunications for future guests. We appreciate your time to post your review.

Morgan's Rock is a luxury eco-lodge situated above one the most picturesque beaches in Nicaragua. We found it equal to the top eco-lodges in Costa Rica. Rooms (casitas) climb a steep hillside adjacent the reception/restaurant complex. Higher elevation casitas require a hike to reach but offer lots of privacy and serene views over the lovely cove-beach. Food served at the open-air restaurant is quite good, with emphasis on fresh local ingredients, much of it sourced on the resort's own farm. Service is friendly and efficient. An eco-guide is on hand to organize kayaking, surfing, nature hikes and excursions to San Juan del Sur and the colonial city of Grenada. Howler monkeys, sloths and an amazing variety of birds are to be seen everywhere you look. It is a bit pricey but you'll leave convinced you got your money's worth.

Room Tip: Beachside unless you're energetic and fit enough to climb to the hillside rooms. All rooms are...

Thank you for your post, Dave. We agree with your comparison to other top eco-lodged in neighboring Costa Rica. Our services and meals are a direct reflection from Nicaragua´s great hospitality and excellent farm products. We wanted to clarify that our bungalows do not have AC, but they were designed to allow the ocean breeze to cool it off, with the help of two ceiling fans.

We wanted a beach vacation that also had jungle adventures, and boy did this place deliver! We went in the off-season (i.e. rainy) which we were initially worried about, but in this case it actually seems like the best time to go because everything was green and lush, and the only time it really rained was at night. This time (early September) was also nice because very few people were there and we pretty much had the resort all to ourselves.

Our private villa was on a hillside overlooking the ocean (incredible view), that made for great sleeping with the sound of the ocean in the background. The architecture was also very cool with lots of beautiful wood and custom artistic fixtures...definitely not your typical boring cabin.

We signed up for the daily excursion package which I highly recommend. Again, since it was off season, we pretty much had our own personal tour guide (Bismar, you were awesome!) for the jungle tour, horseback riding, farm tour, estuary kayaking, etc. A highlight was when the front desk called us one evening to tell us to hurry down to the beach because baby turtles were hatching and were on their trek to the ocean...a perfect vacation experience!

I'm rambling now so should wrap this up. Overall, Nicaragua has all the beauty and adventure of Costa Rica, but without all the crowds. If you want a unique, memorable, wonderful vacation, then this place is for you.

Thank you for highlighting the perks of traveling during our Green Season. Everything is lush and green, and the temperature drops at night. That´s great that you got to see baby turtles hatching.

We spent our honeymoon at Morgan's Rock at the end of August and we are so happy we decided on this vacation. The property is enormous and beautiful with so much to explore. Since we were there in the "off season" it was very quiet. I think the busiest it was during our stay was 4 couples. We had the beautiful private beach to ourselves almost the entire vacation. The beach was great - somedays the waves were pretty big but it made the boogie boarding very fun.

The time of year for this vacation was actually perfect in our opinion. It was very green and the rain never kept us inside for very long. It usually rained hard for an hour or at night, so it didn't impact any tours we wanted to do.

The bungalow was very nice and comfortable. It took a couple nights to get used to the sound of the ocean, but we can't really complain because it was such a treat to be so close to the ocean. It was really nice to have coffee delivered every morning so you could wake up and enjoy the beautiful morning on your private patio with a cup of coffee.

The food, tours and service were exceptional! Had one of the best steaks we've ever had in our lives here. Breakfast at the farm was so much fun and tasty. All of the staff were so friendly. Our spanish was terrible but they really tried to help us with it and it was a blast. The shuttle service to and from the airport was also really nice to have available. Our flights arrived late at night and departed early in the morning and the staff were very flexible with our shuttle service.

Overall 10/10 for our vacation and we would definitely recommend Morgan's Rock to anyone interested in a relaxing and quiet vacation. If you're used to big hotel chains and huge resorts and prefer that setting, this isn't likely for you. This is a great couples resort or would be really fun with a small group of friends. Very secluded and romantic place for a honeymoon.

Thank you for such a thoughtful post! We are so glad you had the ¨most amazing vacation¨. Green Season is a great time to visit for the same reasons you mentioned: very green flora, rain doesn´t affect much, private and excellent waves. We hope you guys come back down in the near future.
