“Great place, fantastic views, better owner!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 19, 2012

I stayed at Buena Onda for a week. The rooms are great, really clean and the bay views from the terrace are amazing! The owner, Baba, is very friendly. Hung out with him a couple of times and was really fun. Definitely the best option in San Juan.

Read the reviews and decided to give this place a shot. This is not a hostel, at least not one like I've been too. It's more of a B&B; by far the nicest hostel I've ever seen. It's a short 3 minute walk up the hill (good little workout) and sits in a little local neighborhood. The front door is always locked making the place amazingly safe. There are 5 rooms, 2 of which are on the top floor next to the kitchen and common area. The view of the bay is spectacular and it's often hard to leave. Just sit in one of the many rocking chairs or lay in one of the many hammocks with a morning coffee or evening cocktail and enjoy the breathtaking views. The true treat this place is the owner, Baba. He is very giving and a fantastic host. He quickly became a great friend and never hesitated to answer any of my questions. This place is by far the best deal in town and I will most definately be back.

I would rather call this a hotel than a hostel. The French owner Baba surely learned from his own travels around the world what a traveller wants.

Positives:
- Clean! Shoes are to be taken off at the entrance
- Great value for money. I paid $10 per night for a huge room + own bathroom.
- A kitchen clean and full of utensils and appliances. You actually want to cook here;)
- Away from the party noise, tucked away in a residential area so you actually have the feeling you are in Nicaragua
- Sweet neighbours that will say hello to you
- Great view and plenty of hammocks
- Great owner
- Fun times with the other guests in the common area.
- Plenty of space to do yoga
- The thickest mattress I have seen in Nicaragua
And I can go on and on....

Negatives:
- There was no Wifi yet the moment I was here. But that could also be regarded a positive. Baba has a internetstick he shares with you and you can access the internet.
- Lots of dogs and roosters in the surroundings so you might want earplugs. But hey...this is Nicaragua

Room Tip: The rooms upstairs face the common area with the great view. So you will have a great view, but less...

Got here by accident, following a couple I have just met and just couldn't leave the place. A newly built 2 story, 5 rooms hostel, designed by the owner,a nice guy named Baba. Definitely the best designed hostel I got to stay in. My room was built from a little cement and lots of wood. The shower was covered with bamboo and he water coming from bamboo pipes as well. From the second floor you can see the entire view of the bay when sitting in a hammock.... Baba will help you with anything you ask him for. Highly recommended for more than a reasonable price.

Really, this hotel is wonderful and I can only recommend every body to go there!

Can't say enough about Buena Onda and its owner Baba. The top story rooms come with king size bed and private bathroom for only $20 a night. Kitchen is clean with all necessary equipment plus more. Coupled with the amazing view and excellent common areas, makes it feel like an upmarket hotel at hostel prices.

The owner Baba is very helpful and great for a chat. Can't recommend Buena Onda enough.

Also, ignore the review by Kelley in 2006. Baba only completed construction 6 months ago so she has obviously confused this Hostel with a Hotel somewhere else.

Room Tip: Two rooms on the top story are the best

We stayed at Buena Onde for two nights. The walk into town was a 5 minute easy walk (slightly harder on the way up with the hill) and the view from our room and the bar and hangout area was great. The building itself is nice, the rooms are a decent size and the bed was comfortable. The owner Baba is really friendly but we only saw him on our last day and the guy he had looking after the place while he was out didn’t speak much English. There are certainly good things about this hostel but unfortunately there are too many negatives which give it the average rating. The bedroom had no curtain and no fly screen. It was way too hot to have the window closed so we were bitten by mosquitoes throughout the night. The bathroom had a good shower and a cool bamboo tap but the toilet was so close to the wall that you have to sit on it sideways and there is a curtain instead of a door separating the bathroom from the bedroom. We also had lots of ants making a path from the window along our bed to the other side of the room. It seems like it is still a new hostel (i.e Baba is still waiting for the internet router to be delivered) so maybe it’s just a few teething problems. And it is very cheap which helps!
