“Could have been amazing.....”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 27, 2012

This place is a little odd. The house is gorgeous, the beach is beautiful and there is so much potential for a true paradise experience here! Greg and Ina weren't the warmest hosts which would have been fine under different circumstances but it's quite remote - a good 40 minutes from town if you drive yourself - so because of that and the price, I unfortunately assumed they would be more invested in providing for their guests. Plus it felt a little awkward because it's very much their house - you walk past them as they're watching a movie on their TV in their living room, as they're eating dinner at their table, and our bedroom was right next to their bedroom. My advise to travelers is just to enjoy the beauty of the house without expectation. My suggestion for Greg & Ina would be go ahead and turn it into a B&B. Providing this start to the day would go along way to making guests feel welcome in this beautiful, if remote, setting!

Located about an hour bus ride from San Juan del Sur, the beach of El Coco is a little treasure. We booked lodging at La Veranera and after walking the CR/NC border, taxi haggling, and bus wrangling, we were very happy to finally have arrived at the house. Greg and Ina were not in so we were shown to our rooms by a friend(?) who was short on words and not the most inviting person..I am sure our first impression would have been different if the owners had greeted us.
The home is beautiful. Situated right on the beach with an old hacienda feel to the place..just beautiful. Our room was large with a king bed and nice size bathroom and costed $70/night. The price was steep.
On the positive side: Ina and Gregg seem like really nice people, laid back and easy going..and that is a gift in itself. And again, you are right on the beach and the pool and terrace is lovely.
Draw back: The room is located just off the kitchen and right by the outside bar, so can be a bit noisy. We were a bit bumbed in the morning to look out our room window and see one of the employees sleeping right underneath our window. Not ok. We didn't feel like we had privacy. For $70/night in Nicaragua, we expected a bit more.
Enjoyed our time at Playa El Coco though..great beach, nice people..

Our trip in Nicaragua was fantastic. Our last five days though, were definitely the peak of the whole trip. Thank you Greg, Ina, Jim and Gonzalo for such fine hospitality. After all, you're letting your guests into your wonderful private home (Ina & Jim). Such a beautiful house built with feeling - choice of material, quality, everything esthetically perfectly balanced! And the location!! Bang on the beach! The constant sound of the rolling waves and an absolutely fabulous sunset! ...and not to mention your cooking!!! WOW!!
Thanx from Linda, Harald and Laura

La Veranera is a cozy, charming guest house right on the Playa El Coco, one of the most beautiful and enjoyable beaches we have ever experienced. Beachside house is beautiful and well-designed with lots of stone and tile. Overhanging roof creates lovely outdoor space. Very nice pool. Convenient WiFi. Our room was spacious and very comfortable with lights for reading. Great bathroom and shower. Hosts Jim and Ina were helpful with our questions and plans. Only real caveat: You need to close the windows to keep out the 'no-see-'ems' and mosquitoes at night.
We enjoyed the beach at all hours and also visited Playa El Flor about 2 miles south which has an even larger stretch of wild beach and a nesting population of sea turtles --- this is worth visiting even during the day.
Nice local restaurant is conveniently next door and another one is a few more doors down.
This guest house is an excellent value for independent travelers. It would be a great place for birders and naturalists to visit the beaches south of San Juan del Sur. We walked and bicycled along the road and had an easy time birding there. This has potential as a birding spot but this does not seem to be realized by any of the local tourist businesses.
Since this is a guest house and not a hotel so we didn't expect that level of service. It suited us well and we hope to see this beautiful beach and local cast of characters again. Recommended.

Room Tip: Our queen bed room was very comfortable and spacious, nice lights for reading. screens would help k...

If you want to see one of Nicaraguas most beautiful beaches you just HAVE TO go to Playa el Coco and once you are there Veranera is just the best place to stay. I've been there several times and never wanted to leave once I arrived there. Waking up in the xxl-double-king-size beds, relaxing on the terrace with a wonderful view on the pacific ocean and the beach, going boogie boarding in the waves, watching turtles at night, cooking fresh seafood in the well equipped kitchen and drinking one or two beer in the night with the really, really lovely owners - that's my idea of paradise!

I have seen many beautiful beaches around the world, but Coco is my absolute favorite. Add to that super-nice accommodation right on the beach, and very nice owners to match, and it really can't get any better. I have stayed twice, and am going back for my third visit in December 2011. Highly recommended!

Great place for a surfing holiday. Nicaragua is great to visit and the folks at La Verana complete this. there's surf straight out the front and more options within easy reach. the rum and soda is a great refresher after the waves and watching the sea turtles lay their eggs is an added bonus.
Accommodation and amenities are all great too.
