“First time at Nica Pacific beach”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 18, 2014

Fairly clean, not crowded, felt safe. Restaurants with beach chair/umbrella not far away. Calm with some gentle swells and surf.
Fine, dark sand felt more like soil. Poor visibility for swimming. Few rocks so nice for walking.

“Be Careful”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 14, 2014

The San Juan Del Sur beach is OK. The sand is nothing special and although the view is phenomenal, the beach is more of a habour for boats and ships than anything.
I must share that we were here around Christmas/New Years, and although in all public areas I could not have felt more safe, a group of six of us (three guys, three girls) wandered off to find a more private beach to the south. Although we did find it we had wandered off quite a distance down a dirt road and through bushes where we were mugged on our way back by three masked men with machetes in the middle of the afternoon. It never would have happened if we were in a public area but there isn't always security in numbers.
Try to not take money and valuables with you when on day trips if at all avoidable and stick to the town and/or guided tours. We were in a vulnerable location where these locals could easily take advantage of us and steal our things. We were advised not to contact local police as they are 'not your friends'.
Beautiful place and a fun party town, just use your head when out - both during the day and at night.

“Typical In Town Beach”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 13, 2014

This is your typical in town beach. Lots of locals selling stuff you don't need like sunglasses, gum/candy, and souvenirs. The beach is slightly dirty with trash, though they do clean up regularly. This beach is the local port too so the water is full of boats anchored up. There are several beaches north and south of town that are much cleaner, less crowded, better for surfing, and have a better view. I suggest traveling to those for your typical day at the beach. As always, be aware of sewer outlets for beaches located in a town, you never know where they are located and what they are discharging.

“Disappointed”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed January 2, 2014

Maybe I am biased coming directly from Tamarindo, but this beach was not very nice. Granted I visited on Christmas Day when it was packed with bus loads of locals from surrounding areas, but there was trash all over the beach and the locals were less than friendly. As a single female traveler I am used to the cat calls, but it was taken to a whole new level here. The water was fairly brown, unlike all of the other beaches you can get shuttles to. The next day I caught a shuttle from the Hostel Casa Oro, and it was worth every minute of the 1/2 long bumpy dust ride. The beaches outside of town are very clean, the water crystal clear, and not crowded. If you come to SJDS, spare yourself the time and go straight to Casa Oro and get on the shuttle!

“Beautiful beach day”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 26, 2013

A beautiful day spent lounging and playing at the beach. Watch for late day jellyfish, as being stung hurts! Bring vinegar to dilute the poison.
