“Tasty Cinnamon French Toast”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 6, 2014

We really enjoyed this place as the atmosphere was really cool and the food was tasty. However, I think the service could improve a lot as it was very slow and the portions should be bigger.

My wife and I both chose the Cinnamon French Toasts (about $5 each).

I would come back and check out some other stuff on their menu

“Service is disappointing ”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed March 1, 2014

We have been here several times and although the breakfast is ok, it is very difficult to get decent service. It is always packed and I'm glad business is booming, but hire more servers that actually smile to take care of the customers.
My husband and I both ordered coffee and they only brought one cup. We ordered breakfast and tried to get a server to bring us hot sauce, he gave up and had to go to the counter to get it.
The owner was busy asking the wait staff what color she should paint the walls. Glad she has her priorities in order, could have been a discussion saved for a slower time, not Saturday morning during breakfast rush.
After trying to get our check he had to finally go to the counter again to pay. Forget free refills on coffee.. They never return to the table. Frustrating experience.

“Where the owners hate the patrons”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed March 1, 2014

Before you order anything from their over-priced menu, read the inside first. The owners don't like ANYONE, least of all their patrons. This cafe doubles as a "bookstore" but you can't touch a book unless you are going to buy it. And they are no deal themselves, simply selling for the same price listed on the bookcover. And the owners don't want you to come in, buy a cup of coffee, sit down, and use their WiFi.
The smoothies are good but again, over-priced. This is strange considering that most of their clients are young people backpacking through the area.
The staff, which is local, are great. The owners, who are American ex-pats, are not.

Thanks for your recent review of your experience in El Gato Negro last year. I assure you that the owners do not hate the customers. Were that the case El Gato Negro would not be full each day for the past eight years. Prices are high for quality products. We source internationally and locally from known sources, so that we are buying/serving products without chemicals and preservatives. Just because it is Nicaragua, doesn't mean everything is cheap. The ingredients for our smoothies are a good example. Chia and cacao from Nicaragua has tripled in price over the past two years. Siberian golden goji berries are very expensive. Blueberries from North America are not cheap. We source spirulina from one farm that we trust - again not cheap. If you visit a foreign country, then learn to live with the realities.... Our book selection is the largest in Central America. And yes, you are correct the price is the price on the cover. Why would imported new books be cheaper in Nicaragua? Thank you for your review.
