Coffee is excellent. Wish I had brought many more bags home! Lots of books to choose from too.

“Our Saviour in Nicaragua”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 17, 2011

This place is awesome. A truly independent coffee shop. The owner owns a coffee plantation and roasts the beans fresh every day, in the shop! Not only can you get a great cup of coffee, but if you can stomach a thick 'starbucks-like' latte, mocha or whatnot, they have those too. The food is really good - we had various bagel breakfast sandwiches and granola. The service is pretty good - very attentive. They have a bookstore in here with English books you can buy, as well as some knick knacks like postcards, t-shirts, coffee cups, etc. Comfy couches to relax on. We went here EVERY day we were in San Juan and would probably go back again. My only complaint was that they were only open until 3pm! (A good cup of coffee or smoothie would have been nice at the end of the day).

“Eclectic Spot”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 16, 2011

We had breakfast at this place and I thought it was really cute---they served bagel sandwiches, etc which wasn't authentic but a welcome break from gallo pinto. They also have a large menu of fruit smoothies and juices that were very refreshing.

“Art, Food, Books...what more could you ask for, maybe some service please???”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 8, 2011

Loved El Gato Negro, my husband and I ate there on more than on occasion, great menu and delicious everything we tried. Many coffee choices. YUM! So many things to look at books, art, postcards...and you'll need distractions because getting someone to wait on you might take awhile. In my experience this is quite typical in many small restaurants in Central America, but...come on! It's a North American style cafe - the service should be brought up to par! Luckily, the food is worth the wait!

“Good food, pretentious atmosphere”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 22, 2011

The food is good, and the staff works hard to include ingredients that are usually difficult to find in Nicaragua (but easy in the US, like Ghiradhelli chocolate), and that's appreciated. Also hard to find in Nicaragua? Books. Good books. This can also be found at El Gato Negro, but they are usually good used books, but they're expensive and it's impossible to browse because they're very strict on not touching the books unless you're buying.

It's kind of annoying, and I've never bought a book as a result, but if you're on vacation in San Juan del Sur (or even Granada b/c it's a relatively quick express bus ride) and miss a good, neighborhood coffee shop, this place will fill that void, and definitely has several times for me. Definitely recommended, but they should reconsider their attitudes toward customers :)
