“5 star hospitiality & cleanliness”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 24, 2010

My 6 month old daughter, my partner & I (both surfers) stayed at Rancho Cecilia for a month and a half. We enjoyed the hospitality so much we want to spread the word.
It is very nice to always come back to the casita knowing there would be electricity & water, as they are off the grid. If you ever have been to Nicaragua before you know the electricity can go out at any time & for days.
We really enjoyed Liz's cooking, definately a plus after long days on the beach.
The casita is nice and close to the surf but enough off the main road to not have the noise and dust.
We highly recommend this Hotel!

So this was an absolute no brainer. Great waves every day, great food and great hammock time - me and the 5 member howler monkey family and 10,000 butterflies.
Nicaragua's poverty is not apparent in San Juan del Sur which is bright and colorful and clean. Rancho Cecilia is an off the beaten path surf vacation if you are looking for a reliable get away from cold water. The staff, surf board choices and food were all great.

My wife and I were in need of a vacation from our vacation. We had been traveling via chicken bus and staying in cheap backpacker hostels for several weeks and were looking for a change of pace. We hit the jackpot with Liz and Scott's delightful Rancho Cecilia. Set back from the San Juan del Sur frantic Surf and Party Scene in a hillside forest, the Casita was a perfect place to chill out in a hammock, listen to music, journal and read books purchased at the Gato Negro bookshop or borrowed from Liz and Scott's great collection.

Liz and Scott were fantastic surf hosts, offering advice on which breaks would be best and when. They had a sweet quiver of surfboards for rent and offered surf lessons to beginners. The nearest surf break, Playa Maderas, has a nice reform for beginners and quality outside waves for intermediate/advanced surfers, great exposure to southerly swells and consistent offshore winds for most of the year. As a bonus, there is a fish taco stand on the beach with a cooler full of cold cervezas. Playa Maderas is a bit of a drive/hitchhike from the Casita, but Liz and Scott lined us up with transportation, joined us in the water, and took some great photos of our surf trip.

We are already looking forward to our next visit to the Casita!

Rancho Cecilia is the perfect place to stay for surfers who want a quiet, relaxing place in the jungle, and a break from the Cancun-spring-break feel of San Juan del Sur. Liz & Scott were amazing hosts and made me feel at home. They are very experienced surfers and excellent teachers. In addition to lessons, board rental is available. You can get groceries at Pali, which is close by, and cook your own meals, try Liz & Scott's tasty dinners, or go to Maria's restaurant down the road. If you want some quiet time, chill at the casita in a hammock or on the porch while listening to birds and monkeys. There's a stereo where you can hook up your iPod (bring a cable) or a flashdrive, or there are some CDs already in the casita. If you're trying to pack light, there are books and surfer magazines as well. If you feel like some company, Liz & Scott are great to hang out with. I enjoyed staying with them so much that I've already been back for a second visit and plan to make another trip soon. They took such good care of me! Thanks Liz & Scott!

Liz & Scott and their little casita are the best!! Ten minutes from the surf, perched in the trees with the monkeys and sounds of the jungle, the little casita is comfortable and airy with open (screened!!) windows and surrounded by rain forest flowers. When I was sick, they arrived to help, welcomed me into their house, shared thrilling waves, and then there were those freshly made tortillas to go with morning Nicaraguan coffee.....I'm on my way back,

Great accommodations, wonderful hospitality, and, best of all, AWESOME SURF!

From the moment we arrived, Scott and Liz went out of their way to help us feel right at home on the Rancho. The Casita exceeded our expectations and the fully stocked fridge was exactly what we asked for. Katy went above and beyond preparing fresh tortillas for us and helping us to keep the Casita spotless!

Scott and Liz assisted us with rides, restaurants, shuttles to the surf, and even hung out with us in the surf line up. Evening dinners at the local Tres Marias (walking distance from the Rancho) were filled with smiles, laughter, and FLOR DE CANA.

The surf was PERFECT. Playa Maderas was our main hang out because of the close proximity to the Rabcho, but Scott and Liz hooked us up with drivers, and we explored several other surf beaches as well. We were often the ONLY people surfing! The waves were consistently 3-6 and we had a few days of 10-12!

During our stay, we had the opportunity to see several other accommodations in the area, and we were SO HAPPY to be staying at the Rancho.

Thanks Scott and Liz for everything! Can't wait to be back for our THIRD visit!

If you are planning a surf trip to Nicaragua then plan on Rancho Cecilia. Located near Playa Maderas, a fun consistent surf break Rancho Cecilia is close enough to town yet far enough away. Liz and Scott are the perfect hosts and will treat you right. They can show you all the local hot spots and other nearby breaks. They are awesome people to hangout and party with; they will truly give you a one of a kind vacation. You will come as guest but leave as true friends. Bring some Tona and tell em’ Fred sent you!!
