“A little out of the way.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 13, 2013

When my family and I chose to stay here, we didn't realize how far out the way Mango Rosa actually was from the town of San Juan del Sur, and the beaches. Looking at it on the map was a bit deceiving. However, it was still a great experience. When we arrived, we were supposed to be in a one bedroom bungalow, but there were a couple of maintenance issues, so Greg put us in a two bedroom instead for no extra charge. He said that he wanted us to have a good experience while we were there.
Overall, the food was very good, but I don't recommend the grilled lobster and linguine.
The staff and Greg were always very friendly. Greg was kind enough to drop us off at Playa Madera for a day of surfing and then offered to pick us up at the end of the day.
The place we stayed in was very spacious and had a full kitchen. The only issue we had were the bugs. Flying ants, large red ants, and mosquitoes were the main issue. Every time we would walk in, we'd have to kill a large amount of these bugs just so we'd feel comfortable falling asleep at night. Just make sure you have bug spray to prevent mosquito bites.
Also, if you want your place cleaned while you're staying there, you have to tell them you want it cleaned.
If you're looking for peace and quiet, this is definitely the place to be.

Get in the groove at this gem of a place. Greg went out of his way t personally take us for a forest trek. And Dexter is not only a super cool dude but very humble as the national short board surf champ. He gave my whole family a lesson.. It was awesome. At a special hidden beach. No one around. Just these killer wave breaking one after the other.. Get there before word out about this great surf spot. Could of stayed a month. Going back soon. Quirky and wonderful. Make reservations for pizza night up the road.

It was our first time in Nica and coudln't have been more impressed with the service and hospitality at Mango Rosa. Greg is a great host and made me and my boyfriend feel right at home. All the staff there greet you with a smile on their face and are there to help you without a moments hesitation. The Rancho Grande, although not authentic Nica, was a great "watering hole" after a long day on the beach. We were able to meet some great people that have made Nica their home. This is a PERFECT place for someone that has never been to Nica before and wants to learn more about this fantastic country.

The only downside is that not everything worked 100%. The cable box didn't work and the one AC unit was "tempermental". Seeming we had zero expectations going into this trip - it isn't a deal breaker at all. If you are looking for a 5* experience.... I would strongly suggest not even going to Nica.

Finally - a HUGE shout out to Dexter. He was an amazing guide, teacher, host and all round great guy. He can surf pretty much anything that he's up against; but has the patience to teach a couple of Canucks!! Here's hoping to getting him up to Canada for some snowboarding!!

All in all - an amazing experience and already looking at flights back.

I have been to many parts of Central America and Nicaragua twice before. My recent stay at Mango Rosa is now at the top of my list. The resort is extremely well designed and comfortable. The staff makes you feel right at home whether it's that first coffee in the morning or your last cocktail before bedtime. All the meals I had there were fresh and very tasty. San Juan Del Sur is very close and accessible for nightlife and exploring. If you are a surfer forget about Costa Rica and check out this area. Thanks to Greg and everybody we met that help give my friends and I a vacation to remember. Already planning my return visit.

This place really is a special resort. It was my first time in Nicaragua, traveling with a group of about 18. The staff was SO friendly and took us to the beach and into town any time we needed. The beach is not far away however to walk in the heat and humidity would be difficult so the staff always drove us. Right away we felt like family, getting to know employees and bartenders by name. The owner even cooked a huge BBQ one night for everyone and we ate just like we were all family. Anytime we needed surfing lessons, Dexter was their to assist. Mango Rosa is a great place to stay especially if you are knew to the area because they will take care of you.

In terms of rooms, we had a spacious little apartment style cabana with our own kitchen and 2 bedrooms. AC was provided in the bedrooms which made sleeping easy. I will definitely be returning.

We stayed in the one bedroom bungalow. The location was beautiful and relatively close to the ocean (can easily walk to one of the beaches). It was nice to have a kitchen, though the dishes/silverware set was incomplete. The bed was comfortable. The bathroom was nice and sufficiently spacious. Surfing lessons were very good. The pool was nice, though the pool deck/chairs could use some maintenance. There were times when we were by the pool and the bartenders had no one to serve at the bar. It would be nice if they would come around once in a while to see if anyone would like food/drinks, etc. We reported that the DVD player was not working, and when one person could not fix it, no one followed up on this issue. The menu is very "gringo", so for someone looking for more traditional Nicaraguan food, the on-site restaurant was not the place for me. As a seasoned Nicaraguan traveler who speaks Spanish fluently, this placed was a little too American for me, but was a good place for my non-Spanish speaking brother and sister-in-law to end their trip.
