“Noisy campground”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 24, 2013

We stayed in one of the new deluxe cabins. The campground and the cabins were clean and very coincidently located. The bad: the cabins were located on a hill next to a train track. Trains ran all day and all night long. There is RV Parking just across a one lane gravel road. There were Rvs pulling in and Parking and the headlights shine right into the bedroom window! Bring something to cover the windows. The cabin next to our had a family come and set up a tent right between our cabins. There was a family of 4 camping right next to our deck. I am surprised they allow that! They were very noisy as well. For the price we paid for the cabin, they should not allow people to set up tents between the very close cabins.

When we go camping, we expect to connect with nature, hear birds, crickets and maybe water cascading from a nearby brook. Hershey Highmeadow did not satisfy this expectation for us. The guests did not have any regard for the other guests- families packing up let their kids run around SCREAMING at the top of their lungs at 8am on a Sunday morning (yes, I have kids too and no, I don't let my kids act like that. Where has consideration for others gone these days???) We are camping and we get up early too, but the behavior we witnessed was totally unacceptable.

If you didn't hear the train you heard the nearby quarry. I slept with earplugs in all night.

With that said, this is a place of convenience. The grounds are well kept and the bathrooms, pools and camp store are immaculate. The shuttle to Hershey park was fantastic, so all in all, we spent very little time at the campground itself.

Bottom line - stay here if you want to save money and spend your time exploring the local attractions. Don't stay here if you expect an awesome nature experience.

We've camped here numerous times. Usually in the summer, while on vacation in Hershey. We have a travel trailer, and prefer to stay in the Woodland part of the facility. The sites are close to each other, but we've never found that to be a problem. I was nervous about the site width, but it's always been manageable. We like the back row of the Woodlands as there is ample room behind your site for parking, dog walking, etc. A lot of folks whine about the train, especially in written reviews. We enjoy hearing and seeing the railroad operations, but if that isn't your thing, maybe you want to be elsewhere. We don't find it to be a problem, and the Hershey attraction discounts available to campers here can't be beat. The free bus transportation to and from the Hershey attractions is the icing on the cake for us. I always look forward to a Hershey trip, and camping at the Hershey Highmeadow Campground.

My family has been camping here for the past 6 years and stayed several times each year. The grounds even after the flooding in 2011 have always been well maintained and facilities clean. I highly recomend this campground to campers of all ages.

My first time camping and I loved it! The bath houses were super clean. The grounds were kept very nice and the employees were great! Yes there is a train that goes by once every couple hours but it didn't bother us at all. I would definitely stay here again.

We arrived on Friday for opening weekend of Hershey Park (5/3/2013). Check-in was quick and efficient as we were already pre-paid. Our first time staying in this campground, although we have driven through a few times before. We were in site 215 in the Woodland section. Sites in the Woodland are very tight and can feel a little like a parking lot, but all sites are VERY level and long enough to fit camper and TV. As we did not need to drive anywhere for the weekend, we just pulled in and turned off the truck. Level and ready to set up, we didn't even un-hitch. Site 215 is on the 'outer' loop of the Woodland and backs to a field and hill that is good for dog-walking.

You already know from the other reviews that the train is an active train. Probably 2 to 3 trains an hour rumble by at the top of the campground. From the Woodland section, you hear the train, but certainly not a big bother. No horns or anything - just a rumble. If you're in a camper, you probably won't be bothered while you sleep. Maybe in a hybrid or popup you'll hear it, but again - not obnoxious by any means.

Staying in the Hershey Highmeadow Campground allows you to use a "Preview" night - getting in 2.5 hours before the park closes for free. They mark your tickets to note that you used your preview. Then, next day, you can go for the full day in the park. The preview allows you to 'close the park' and experience the rides after dark without having to put in a whole 12 to 14 hour day in the park. Additionally, staying in the campground allows you to enter the park an hour before opening.

Let's talk about site selection. We have a 29 foot travel trailer and would never imagine going without sewer hookups. I have two teenage daughters!! That's one of the reasons I picked the Woodland section - sewer and away from the train. Now that I've been on-site and walked around, I would highly recommend sites 1 through 6 or 7 in the Hilltop section. They are very nice vistas on a terraced hill. Plenty of space between sites, still W/E/S and a fair amount of shade. You might be thinking that the sites are a bit close to the railroad tracks, but as I said before, I think you'll be fine if you're in a hard-sided RV of any kind.

If you plan on going to the park on the day you checkout, do not expect that you'll be granted a late checkout or be able to stay on your site. There is usually a good amount of traffic and turnover of sites. You can take the camper to the parking lot of the park, but the cost to park is about $25.

No seasonal campsites in this park. Clean, orderly, decent amount of family groups. Some cub scouts / boy scouts in the tenting area. Nice atmosphere.

Overall, a very nice park. Highly recommend.

Room Tip: Sites 1 through 7 in the Hilltop section are excellent in this campground.

since this is the only campground near hershey so you end up staying here by default. there is zero privacy, sites are VERY close together (you can hardly hear a tv over the voices in the next site); but at least they are level gravel. if you are in a large motorhome, it's a little tight pulling in with other units in their sites; if they are empty, you have some room to maneuver. it seems that everyone has a campfire going all day, so you have to keep your windows shut to avoid a serious smoky camper. they do have cable hookup, but if you have a satellite, you might get some channels. not a bad campground, the store is nice, they are very strict with their rules.
