I like to go to Bryn and Dane's, Salad Works or grab a build my own salad from Giant or Acme most days for lunch. Bryn & Dane's has both positives and negatives, so here goes -
1.) Atmosphere - very cool, beach style atmosphere for a 'fast food' restaurant. Good music always playing, and just kindof a fun laid back place.
2.) Drinks/Smoothies - the smoothies from what I have tried are good as are the different brewed teas available. I have not tried the chili or frozen yogurt.
3.) Wraps - The wraps are pretty good. My favorite is the Santa Barbara BLT, but the Tennessee Blu, Cabo Taco and Charleston Honey are good as well.
4.) Sweet Fries - I can't say I am much of a sweet potato fan, but these are pretty good.
5.) Cals, Carbs, Fat, Fiber & Protein - all menu items include a breakdown of the fat, fiber protein calories and carbs - great for those of you on weight watchers. Most menu items are listed essentially as 6 points or less, also a positive.
1.) Salads - For a 'healthy fast food' place, they sure don't have many salads to choose from. I tried my first salad there today and the salad was terrible. I had the Santa Fe which the girl at the counter said was the best one. God I hope not. It had nothing more than a ton of mixed greens, some overcooked chicken, a few of the tiniest tomatoes I have ever seen, some corn and an ok/marginal sauce. It was one of the blandest, flavorless salads I have ever had. I'm not sure about the others, but this one was chincy on the ingredients thats for sure.
2.) Quessadillas - I've tried the quesadillas before, and my impression on that was chincy and bland as well. I don't see why they have to sacrifice ingredients for the sake of calling it healthy. Add some squash or zucchini to them and suddenly you have a quesadilla that has both flavor and some healthy ingredients. Chicken cheese and wrap does not equal healthy. Add some veggies guys.
3.) Fountain Sodas - just my taste here, but I'm not much of a fan of the fountain sodas either.
4.) Soup - I only ever had the chicken noodle soup, but it was horrible. I didn't even finish it.
I hate to say it....but the food is marginal at best. I get it - healthy fast food isn't going to taste as good as a quarter pounder with cheese from McDonalds, but I think they really miss the mark here. Its possible to keep the food and drinks low in points/calories and what not, without completely sacrificing for flavor and taste. Add more vegetables to the mix guys - squash, zucchini, cucumbers, black beans, corn, carrots, etc - it will add to the flavor of your menu items. And as someone who does follow weight watchers, I can tell you this - if your food had flavor, I would be willing to sacrifice an extra point or two if it meant I genuinely enjoyed your food.
I want Bryn & Dane's to succeed. I think healthy fast food is a real money making idea. But your food needs to be more than just edible. Meet with some of the better chefs in the area and pick they're brains - the better the food, the bigger the following.
