“Not sure why so many great reviews, we would not go back.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 4, 2011

This is my first trip advisor review. I use them all the time for my families vacations and thought it was time to provide some of my own feedback.

This was our first trip to Woodlock. Our family is five with three boys aged 16, 13, and 6. We stayed on one of the Tuesday - Saturday vacations during the last week of august/first weekend of september.

We had expected an all inclusive vacation. Meaning the kids didn't need to ask for money all day while racking up additional costs. We also assumed that with all the activities listed there would be plenty to do for all age groups.

Here are my pluses and minuses:

+ Food was good especially for an all inclusive, Way too much of it but overall good. The fresh breads/muffins in the morning were our favorites and we took some home with us.
+ Overall service was good. We seemed to have a table however that was between two wait staff. Other tables seemed to have the same wait staff at each meal. We had several. On more than one accassion, I had to call over a staff member from another table to take our order. Seems like a dumb problem and easy to fix. Staff was helpful, flexible and seems happy to be there in dining room and activities. However staff in night club and other areas where they charged for drinks were not as nice and sometimes seemed annoyed when you asked for water in lieu of a paid drink.
+room and grounds cleanliness overall again very good. We arrived the last day they had no power after 3 days without so needless to say some issues with the cleanliness of the room until electricity came back on.
-I would no take children under the age of 12. our two older boys were bored especially after dark. I could keep them somewhat occupied during the day but at night it was really hard. Woodloch needs some type of teen club/area/activities catered to those age groups so they can meet others their age and do things together. We asked the social director when she came around at dinner the first night and although she said they were other kids there my own's age she could not point any out and instead offered that her daughter worked there.
-It is not an all inclusive. Although Woodloch says it's all inclusive other than alcohol it's not true. We went to the nightclub. I ordered some sodas and then received a bill. When I questioned this was told the drinks are only included when in the dining hall. So they charge for a soda at the pool, at the beach, at the nightclub, during bingo etc. Also although they offer food at the pool, beach etc. You can only eat on the meal plan in the dining room where they do not allow bathing suits. So for lunch we had to go back to the room, change and then go to the dining room. They also charge for quite a few of the activities including shooting range, batting cage, all of the games in the game room inlcuding buying a pingpong ball to play. I felt this was really petty especially given the price we paid.
- The price. sorry but I don't get it. With the five of us in a room and the discount we received , they still charged $787. 25 a night. I am from NY and that's still a shocker. Finally the service charge of 15 % which is in addition to the room charge and of course room taxes. It does not include the alcohol servers and luggage handlers and believe me they wait for their tips. At the end of the day I felt it was very expensive for what we got and then were nickel and dimed for many other items.

diane s - Thank you for taking the time to review your recent experience with us. We are saddened to see that you did not fully enjoy your visit with us. We strive to provide each and every member of your family with many different options with respect to activities and entertainment, and we apologize if your family did not find as many activities to take part in as others. While the activities that you listed are ones that would require an additional charge, we are happy to say that the majority of what Woodloch has to offer is included in your stay, from bumper cars and boats to go carts and waterskiing. We try to provide age appropriate activities, and for teens we have our Bunker lounge and (karaoke, teen party, ?). While it seems your children gravitated towards the few things that are paid for out of pocket, we want to reaffirm that all of the daily planned activities, meals, daily houskeeping, nightly entertainment, most amenities, and gratuity to any wait staff, housekeeping, or social staff is included in one price for your enjoyment. We hope that you will reconsider your decision to not visit us in the future, and if you would like to speak to a member of our management team please do not hesitate to email woodmark at woodloch dot com. We hope that you will visit us again in the future!

Jst returned from a two night, three day stay at the Springs. We had to postpone our trip by one day due to Hurricane Irene and the resorts lack of power. While we were told the resort was fully booked, it seemed many people had cancelled their plans and therefore we didnt experience any crowding or lines that other reviews have mentioned. The house was lovely and comfortable , and having the option of not being on the meal plan worked great for us and was much more cost effective- however I wish we had been notified at check in that there was availability now on the main property. It would have been nice for us to be able to make our own decision about accomodations. I dont know if it was due to the power outages but we had many problems with the bathrooms at the house. The first night the toilet was running all night. When I called at 3am I was told that maintenance leaves at 11pm. I understood that the gentleman I was talking to (who was super nice) was offering to come take a look but at 3am I didnt want to wake the half of the house that was asleep with someone who may or may not know how to fix it coming in- especially when I didnt know which of the five bathrooms was making all the noise. They came to fix it the next morning but a sleepless night on vacation leads to a cranky mom the next day. The second night we again had two more problems with the toilet plumbing. One valve on a toilet was off, and then the master bathroom that had been fixed wasnt working again. When we brought all this to managements attention (Amy I believe) we were brushed off. The resort was very responsive to the issues- but at $1250/night I am left very disppointed that a partial credit wasnt offered. We were inconvenienced many times by having to keep reporting maintenance issues- leaving activities to do so- not to mention a sleepless night.

The first days activities were amazing. We loved the family double dare- the activities team was top notch. The Winnie the Poo party and candy hunt was also a hit. Loved Woodlochpalooza. The second day was also fun, however we were very disappointed when we all attempted to go bike riding. The bicycle helmets are kept across the property from where the bikes can be found. This is very inconvenient. It took forever for the twelve of us to all get out helmets and then get to the actual bike site. When we finally arrived we found that the bikes are all very old and basically unrideable. My friends daughter was literally at an angle on her training wheels. My 8 yr old son was crying b/c all of the two wheelers were too big for him and there was no staff there to lower his seat and no tools to do so ourselves. This is an area where the resort could invest a tiny amount of money. Would also like to have seen shuttle service between the houses and resort.

mglauberg - Thank you for sharing your recent experience with us. We are happy to see that you enjoyed our planned activities and evening entertainment that we provide on a daily basis. The homes like that one that you stayed in provide you with a cost-effective way of enjoying these amenties while providing you with the option of either preparing meals on your own or making separate dining reservations. We apologize for any inconvenience regarding the bathrooms in the home. The aftermath of Hurricane Irene was unforeseeable and affected many homes and businesses in our area, and may have been partly to blame for some of the issues experienced.. We strive to to uphold a high standard of cleanliness and want to ensure that every guest home is in top condition for any of our guests, and we have taken measures to inspect all baths in the homes in the wake of the recent storms. Our maintenance staff also inspects all bicycles on a regular basis, and we apologize if correct sizes were unavailable at that time. We typically have a staff member to oversee the activities and provide assistance in that immediate area, including the bicycles. If you would like to speak to a member of our management team with respect to your stay, please do not hesitate to email us at woodmark at woodloch dot com. We hope to see you and your family and friends in the near future!

This was our first experience at this resort and we wanted to stay close to home because of health concerns for one of us. Previously we had travelled all over the world and have had many wonderful experiences. We were surprised and delighted with our experience at Woodloch. We were three generations and all activities were geared so we all could participate. Our dietary needs were totally met. The employees are all happy and share that with the guests. We were 100% satisfied with our vacation.

Room Tip: We stayed in a 2 bedroom suite with a kitchen which we needed.

We had our 12th consecutive summer at Woodloch Pines in August and it was like coming home to family and friends! We have always felt that why leave your home if it's not for something wonderful and we are welcomed there with open arms by all the staff. Our four children have passed on offers of vacations to Disney World and other places in favor of going back to Woodloch each year.

Not only are you treated like family, there is not one person who works there who has not bent over backwards to see that everything is how it should be. Our experience in the dining room has always been great--the staff has catered to our needs and remembers our food preferences. The games and activities are abundant and you can always decide whether to play a game or simply relax by the beautiful lake for the day. No one in our family feels left out of anything and we have, in fact, made friends with multiple families that we met while on vacation at Woodloch and go back every year together since we met.

We recognize that a week at Woodloch is not a cheap vacation--but we are willing to save up all year long for the wonderful experience we always end up having there. It is truly a great place for families of all ages!

Dennis G - thank you for your review, we appreciate the time you took to write it. We're so glad that your experience was, once again, memorable and rewarding. We've got some great traditions here at Woodloch and one that many guests experience is making friends with other guests! When you come back and you are reacquainted with the same family from last year, it makes your Woodloch experience just a little bit better!

Thanks again - see you soon!

My parents, sister, me and my two kids were there for 4 days and had a great time. My daughter also met her new BBF Sofia there as well. One thing though, it's not cheap but most of the activities are included. The swimming pools (yes, there are couple) are really nice and toddler friendly. There is also a jungle gym/game room which is also great for you and the kids to spend time. The food are good (not fancy) but have a very home made quality which we really enjoys. The only thing I want to mention is that my kids loved the sand box but it's in the middle and right next to a walkway with no umbrella or trees to provide some shades and no seating next to the sand box for me to be next to them. Would love to see some shades over the sand box so the kids and I could play there longer without getting sun burn. Overall we enjoy this place very much and will definitely go back.

Room Tip: The internet always have a best price option but you can't chose your room.

We have stayed at Woodloch at least once every year for the last 10 years. It is a very special place, and perhaps the last of its kind in a region that once had so many nearby competitors.

Our first stay at Woodloch 10 years ago was with a large group of extended family. In fact, many of the folks who stay there do the same thing - almost like an annual family reunion. But we have also stayed here with just the immediate family group a number of times and have had just as much fun.

The property is located in a beautiful lakeside setting just outside the Pocono mountain area. It is a family run operation, with many generations of the same family working in different capacities. That is a large part of what makes it so special. They clearly know how to make their guests feel like part of their own family, and seem to really enjoy what they do.

A typical weekend starts with a Friday afternoon check-in, followed by some R&R or activities before dinner, and then a very friendly dinner at which the owners and other employees go table to table to individually welcome and greet each group. The food is always reliably good, and (although I am not sure whether they are supposed to do this as part of the American Plan dining) the wait staff never seems to have a problem if you say something like "I can't seem to decide, I'd like to try two of the entrees please".

Friday night begins the hilarity of a weekend full of fun and laughs. A fellow named Randy Barnes, who is very funny and wears alot of hats , conducts "horse racing" (the old fashioned dice rolling kind, with wooden horses on a "track") in the night club. (Although the club is large, get there early for Friday and Saturday events if you want good seats).

Saturdays are just a whirlwind of activities with three great meals in between. Although there are far too many to list, some that we have done (depending on season) include: "Family Feud", Scavenger Hunt, race cars, batting cages, swimming pools (indoor and out), row boats, shooting range, Bingo, game rooms (2), snow tubing, "Name that Tune", karaoke, whiffle ball, basketball, jungle gym, ice skating, paddle boats, etc.

Saturday evenings begin with a "theme" dinner. Although somewhat kitschy, they are always alot of fun. There is always a "parade" through the dining room, accompanied by the owner's narration and musical background. It is always funny to guess what Randy will be dressed up as. He has been dressed as "Tinkerbelly", "Leprechaun Randy", "Tarzan" and countless other characters during these parades. There also is always a big rolling wooden horse that somehow makes its way into the parade.

After Saturday dinner there is always a very well done show in the night club - usually a stand-up comedian (family friendly) and a surprisingly professional musical show of some kind - reminiscent of "Dirty Dancing".

Sundays add more activities, and end with a huge buffet style lunch.

The rooms and the property as a whole are immaculately maintained by a very friendly and courteous housekeeping staff.

There is something very special about this place that keeps people coming back year after year. The family clearly knows quite a bit about hospitality, but they go well above and beyond the usual norms by trying to make each guest feel personally welcome.

This property remains a very strong member of what has, sadly, become a shrinking breed -- a family run hotel geared toward families.

leprechaunsdad - We can't thank you enough for taking the time to share your Woodloch experience with us. Coming up here with as much as your family as possible is one of the best ways to enjoy what we have to offer - spending quality time with the ones you love. It's so often now that every day family life is nothing but interruptions (for good reason most of the time) and what we try to accomplish at Woodloch is a sense of family belonging and togetherness.

Great rundown of a typical Woodloch weekend - lots to do and lots of fun to be had by all.

Thank you again so much for your review.
Sincerely,
The Woodloch Family

This was our first time to Woodloch, Aug 13-16. We arrived at 10:30 am since it was recommended by a helpful staff member when we called. We were able to go go karting, use the bumper cars, eat lunch, go sailing, and were into our room at 3:15. There was so much to do. The rain started the first night, and continued on and off for the next 2 days, but the activities continued on as long as there was no thunder and lightning. The only thing that was moved indoors was the cookout lunch.

Pros:
Lots to do indoors and out- minigolf, wall climbing, zipline, go cart, water bumper cars, bumper cars, fishing, sailing, etc

Loved the games like double dare, the scavenger hunt, carnival, etc

night time entertainment especially the horse races and music nights

shuttle buses run constantly and we never waited long to get one.

staff was friendly and helpful

Good amount of food choices

Cons:
No day camp - It would have been nice to be able to drop my daughter and son off for a few hours to play with kids her age, while my husband and I could go sailing. We couldn't fit 4 people in a sailboat, so we couldn't go together without leaving someone out.

The organized activities for kids need to be supervised a little closer. My son got hurt and the staff didn't move to help him until we went to him. Good thing we were there, He got hit in the face, right by his eye with a puck.

I wouldn't feel safe allowing my kids to go to certain places alone even though my son is almost 11, like the pool, the woods play area, the gym, the art room, the arcade - because they are not staffed well or at all (like the art room and saw staff very little in the wood play area). The pool also has areas that are a little less visible from where the lifeguards sit and they were as vigilant about looking around as other places I've been to, like Rocking Horse Ranch.

No omelets or egg benendict, or pastry choices during breakfast.. and the family style sides are a nice idea in theory, but there was a lot of wasted food even when we tried to share plates

The staff in the main dining room were falling over themselves trying to be the one to get our drinks. however being asked 15 times by 3 different people throughout the meal, every meal, was annoying. Too bad our main water wasn't that attentive. We could never find him or her when we wanted to order something and often had to wait 15 to 20 minutes between courses before we got our food. (We were at table 26). Also while we were waiting for our waiter, there were 5-7 people standing behind us against the wall doing nothing but complaining about having nothing to do.

Price - a little pricey - You get a lot of activities, but we don't eat that much food. I would like to have the option to go on the food plan or not and whether to have 2 or 3 meals, while staying on the property and not in the springs area.

There is too much kitchen serving staff, they should use those people to staff the art room, woods area, arcade, etc and start up a camp for a few hour a day instead of only having one or two activities a day for an age group that has to be attended by an adult

Room Tip: Pack a small day bag and get there early to use the facilities while you wait for your room to be re...

Thank you very much for your feedback and we’re so glad you had such a pleasant experience here at Woodloch… even throughout the overabundance of rain we’ve seen this month!!!

We take all of your comments very seriously and we will look into the level of service you received during your meal times as well as during our activities, we are so sorry to hear about your son and hope he is ok. This is not the type of attention normally received at Woodloch, we are here to make you feel as comfortable as you would at home…

The idea of a day-camp or a daycare type environment is something we have discussed here at Woodloch, but we keep going back to our tradition of getting families together to reconnect. This is a great idea and maybe it will be something for our future.

Thank you again for sharing your experience with us.

Sincerely,
The Woodloch Family
