Stayed at the Hilton Harrisburg for 13 nights in August 2011. Booked the King Bed Towers Floor because this was the only room type available. Being a government worker, I received the government rate of $209.00 per night.
Arrived around 2 pm Sunday afternoon to a parking nightmare at front entrance. There is no room to park and a valet will move your vehicle to an open spot or park in the garage. I told the valet to hold off parking in garage until I check in at the front desk.
The lobby was extremely crowded with kids and there was a long line at check in. I noted only one person at the front desk working. After about 15 minutes, it was my turn, the front desk girl did not acknowledge my name or even a welcome. I was informed my room was not available and they would call me upon availability. I knew this Hilton had several suites so I asked for availability and I was told NO that they could not assign me a suite due to my length of stay and that I was already upgraded to the tower rooms. I told the lady not true that I am paying for the tower room booked. She said no you getting a $29.00 discount on the tower room and I had to tell her the discount was due to booking the government rate. She could not understand the government rate. Also, I asked for a breakfast voucher that I always get for staying at a Hilton or Garden Inn and I was told they do not do that here. She quickly told me I could talk to the manger tomorrow. Well La Te Da! (Hilton maybe a refresher course on reservations might help the front desk personnel and where’s the friendly smile here?!). Oh by the way Hilton, I went to Raspberries for Monday breakfast and the nice waitress gave me the meal free because of me being a loyal Hilton customer.
So I gave up and went back to get my vehicle to go run some errands. One hour later the front desk called so I headed back to the Hilton and parked in the dingy garage.
More on the garage later…
The lobby was still packed with kids and of course I am back in another long line but there are 2 employees working the front desk. I notice a flyer lying on the front desk and it had information on the “Miss Teen Pageant”. Ahh that is why all the kids are here! And believe me folks they where everywhere with their hair dryers, makeup, fancy costumes and there obnoxious parents. The elevators were a joke with kids riding them up and down like a kiddy ride at the fair. Luckily they all left after Monday competition.
Went to my room on the 15 floor.
The room had a king bed, with a vanity desk between the bed and a big vinyl chair with ottoman. The TV was a LCD panel but only had about 20 channels and none in HD (come on Hilton can’t you get more channels?) and when it rains the TV will loose its signal. There was a frig under the TV but it was luke warm inside and it had to be replaced later. There is a work desk to put your laptop on. The bathroom is small and cramped. However, they do provide you with some good shampoo, soap, mouthwash, lotion.
The rest of this review will be some observations to note:
You must use your room key on elevator for the tower rooms and the lounge is on the 15th floor turn right
The lounge opens at 6:30am and has scrambled eggs, danishes, bagels, coffee, sodas, oj and milk with a bowl of apples, bananas and oranges but no meats. All are subject to availability by the volume of customers. The afternoons It’s a bowl of nuts and cooler with soda and water. That’s it! Oh and the lounge is closed Sunday afternoons.
Order room service several times and was not impress with the quality or quantity of food. The nachos were a small pile of chips with some cheese and cooked onions…not good. The burger and tiny amount fries…well there must be a potatoes shortage in Harrisburg. However, the roasted pork with mash potatoes (again tiny amount) corn, and a salad was the only hit I ate from room service. Also, they do add 18% gratuity for there great service.
Housekeeping and turn down service (2 pieces chocolate and 2 bottle waters) were always prompt and did a great job. I can not tell how happy I am with the excellent service I received from housekeeping. These ladies worked hard and always had a smile on their face. A+ (Hilton give them a raise!)
Homeless folks. They do camp out all around the Hilton and yes you will get approached for money.
Crime. I would not venture alone after dark in Harrisburg. There is always killing, shooting or mugging. Seriously you need to be aware of your surroundings in Harrisburg just listen to the sirens and local news and you will understand this city is infested with crime.
Parking garage. It’s a long walk from the garage to your room especially with luggage. There is a set of stairs off the garage elevators that you must pull your luggage up or down. (Hilton where’s the ramp?)
I usually had to park on the 9th level to find open space but it does depend on your timing. Also, be aware of your surroundings at night there are folks walking the garage looking for money.
I did eat at several local restaurants: MoMo BBQ (great brisket chili), Molly Brannigans (see review), Spice, Mulligan’s, Mama Pizza (good NY style). All were ok nothing outstanding.
However, there is one place that must be mentioned for outstanding food and service is Rockbass Grill (seafood and steaks) by the river with patio seating. I got the seafood platter and it was HUGE and delicious. Came with a large piece of Cod, large shrimp, large scallops, and the best crab cake one can taste with potatoes and a salad. OMG the food! Look for my review coming on this treasure…again Rockbass Grill GO THERE!
Let me just say that 2 reasons I stay in Hiltons and I am a loyal (Diamond here) customer is there normal great customer service (ok front desk needs some work here) and Hilton does allow smoking in a few of there rooms in some locations. Sadly most new Hiltons are non smoking, but a few of the older ones still allow us puffers.
Thank you Hilton and please don’t cut us puffers off like Marriot!
