Went with my teen daughter (who remembers the old Whitaker Center) and 3 boys age 4, 6, and 9. It was ok - kids had a decent time, but I definitely feel like Whitaker Center used to be far more educational AND fun - for those who don't know, this was originally "The Science Museum" and used to be housed in Strawberry Square downtown. It was very inexpensive compared to the Whitaker Center (maybe $5?). When they moved buildings and became an "arts center," suddenly the price doubled, at least. I had a relative who used to work in the old science museum, and they definitely felt like a lot of the stuff was "dumbed down" after the switch. After my recent visit, I had to agree.
A huge part of the space was taken up by the health education area, which includes the clown head in the photos here - one of my kids thought that part was especially disgusting and didn't enjoy it at all. As a couple folks already mentioned, several major exhibits were broken, and some areas were missing parts (there is an area where kids can assemble cars to see which way of building them makes them go fastest, but there were so many parts missing, it was very difficult to try different assemblies). Half of the lowest level was taken up by an exhibit that was supposed to teach kids about how movies are produced, but just looked like a bunch of beeping gadgets to me - didn't seem particularly educational, and wasn't very fun. Also, if you want to see a movie, you'll pay more.
Overall, if you need something safe and indoors for the kids to do, this isn't your worst choice, but the need for maintenance, ridiculous cost, and lack of much 'science' in this 'science center' makes this an underwhelming attraction.
