“Excellent Historic Inn”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 27, 2014

We chose this inn because of its personal historic significance. This 1763 inn was in business as a tavern/inn at that time when 3 of my great-great-great grandparents were living right here. Knew we just HAD to come for the history. However, what we found was so, so much more. The quality of care that Rebecca & Dave have given to their home as well as to their guests can't be surpassed. The rooms are beautiful in the simple Amish tradition of the neighboring communities. You won't want to rise early! Take time to sit on the front porch & in the various areas of the back yard. Truly relaxing. That crunchy French Toast breakfast was particularly awesome. Very friendly, interesting & fun hosts. If coming to Amish country, do NOT miss this wonderful treasure. Thanks, y'all.

Our 2 night stay at the Inn was very comfortable and pleasant. The house displays the historic charm with all the modern conveniences. The Breakfasts were delicious and Rebecca and Dave were very helpful with recommendations for attractions and dinner locations. When we make another trip to the area we plan to stay here again.

Room Tip: The blue room was very spacious with plenty of natural light.

We made a short road trip to Amish Pennsylvania from family visit in New Jersey in late March - weather still poor and snow flurries forecast. We chose to stay at Ephrata and were pleased with our choice. This B and B was very close to the Ephrata Cloister. We had done an organised tour there in the afternoon so I loved the "link" between the two. We stayed in the Red Room (from the pics on the web site the Blue Room would have been my first choice but it was already booked) - love the charm and the bric a brac, sparkling clean ( we looked through the blinds at the snow in the morning - not a novelty for locals but it was for these Aussies - and no dust on these either !) and what a delight to have a working fireplace in the bedroom.
Yes, there was a step into the bath/ shower that we had been forewarned about but it was not an issue. I just had to purchase some of that aromatic soap to store among my clothes! I thought it was odd that people should comment on sheets on trip advisor BUT the sheets really do feel so luxurious and are worthy of comment ! The breakfast was delicious. We had Crunchy French Toast as our feature dish - I thought the china/ crockery ( Portmeirion) that it was served on was pretty special !

The Smithton Inn was the perfect overnight stop - in the morning we explored some of the back roads before making the short drive to Gettysburg for the next night. Another positive for this B and B is that breakfast is available at a much earlier time than others we have stayed at.

The negative on the day was that because there was a "small function" that obviously ran over time in the parlour, we did not have the option of a hot cup of coffee and a biscuit/ cookie on our arrival after 4pm and our host did apologise for this. This was a disappointment especially when it was so cold and miserable outdoors. When we returned from dinner at nearby Lincoln Inn we were pleased to help ourselves to a beverage then and take in the ambiance of that room.

The Smithton Inn is located in the heart of Lancaster County on Main Street in Epharta, PA. Filled with tons of historic charm, you won’t be disappointed after a great night’s sleep and a delicious gourmet home cooked breakfast by Innkeeper Rebecca Gallagher. Both Rebecca and Dave are readily available to recommend local places to eat as well as wonderful shopping experiences. Even though they are only a hop, skip and a jump away from Harrisburg, we spent a wonderful 35th anniversary weekend and hope to make it a yearly stay.

Historic Smithton Inn's charm is inviting and the company is great! You won’t be disappointed whether you come from out of state or nearby.

You must emphasize the BREAKFAST when describing this bed and BREAKFAST. The food is amazing. Rebecca (your hostess) alternates between sweet or savory breakfast each day. We were there for 3 mornings so had 2 savories and 1 sweet and all were AMAZING--accompanied by an enhanced fresh fruit (i.e., melon cup with agave; orange mixture with sesame seeds), homemade muffins and bread, granola, cereal, etc. We stayed in the beautiful Sage room, which is on the first floor so good for older parents and ease of getting luggage in and out (only minus is you hear footsteps if someone in the room above you has a heavy walk and black lamp shades mean low light at night). The extreme pluses are comfortable bed (soft sheets), no road noise, nice bathroom, great TV, easy access to beautiful back garden. The inn is nicely located to get quickly to the tourist areas of Amish country. Rebecca was very helpful in recommending local places to eat and to visit. She helped arrange a dinner in an Amish home which was a very interesting experience. I highly recommend this bed and BREAKFAST and will definitely return if I go back to the area.

Room Tip: Choose the Sage room if you want first floor access (no stairs to your room).

This inn is amazing!!! My husband and I come twice a year- it's our home away from home. So clean and comfortable, relaxing.. And the breakfasts are phenomenal - Rebecca is a tireless creative and enthusiastic innkeeper and she and Dave have really upgraded the inn. They will take great care of you!

The innkeeper here saved our vacation after we had a bad experience with a B&B stay purchased with a voucher. We needed to change our plans quickly and Rebecca graciously accommodated us at the very last minute. Luckily, her Inn is beautiful, her breakfasts filling and delicious and Rebecca is a charming host with a plethora of ideas of what to do in the area. The Smithton Inn is centrally located to all the charms of Lancaster and the Amish with super antiquing opportunities. The Antique Automobile Club of American Museum in Hershey is less than an hour away and a must see for car enthusiasts. We had a lovely stay and would heartily recommend this Inn to all travelers. Oh, almost forgot, there is an added bonus.....a tray of goodies in the room which included the best pretzels ever.

Room Tip: We stayed in the Blue Room....quiet and with a working fireplace.
