Owner description: One of America's earliest religious communities, the Historic Ephrata Cloister was founded in 1732 by German settlers seeking spiritual goals rather than earthly rewards. Gathered in unique European style buildings, the community consisted of celibate Brothers and Sisters, and a married congregation of families. At the zenith of the community in the 1740s and 1750s, about 300 members worked and worshiped at the Cloister. Today, the National Historic Landmark is open for tours, special programs, and on-going research opportunities.

“Very interesting”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 2, 2013

We enjoyed walking the grounds of the cloister. We chose to do the self tour and utilized the cell phone information line. The grounds of the property are kept up very nicely.

“Interesting Place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 18, 2013

Quite an interesting place to visit. Got $1.00 off each ticket for the tour with our AAA card.
I like the tour because you can ask as many questions as you like and the tour guide was very knowledgeable and friendly.
Be sure to bring your cell phone, as the self guided part of the tour, you can use your cell to hear a recording about what they did in each building.

“EXTRAORDINARY EXPERIENCE”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 7, 2013

What a wonderful visit. Did not know much about the Ephrata Cloister before our visit. Started with a movie about the history of the cloister. Took a tour led by Mark, who is a history major in college, and he made the experience come alive. He was very knowledgeable about every aspect of the history and the people who lived here. Toured several of the buildings and walked around the grounds. Wonderful experience and would definnitely recommend it to anyone.

“Fascinating glimpse into the past”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 4, 2013

I wish I could remember the name of our guide because he really made the visit for us. He clearly loves what he does and I think he could have talked for hours. It was more like an education (in a good way) and he had a good sense of humor. We learned a lot about this quirky place. Loved it!

“going back in time”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 2, 2013

It is like traveling back to the 1700 and 1800 to experience how a religious order lived. the buildings are original but very hands on. there are frequent demonstrations to life in the colonial era. An experience for all ages to be enjoyed.
