“Lovely food with choice of settings”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 18, 2012

Great choice on the 5 course menu when we stayed, it's changed daily so always something new to try. The pre desert was a nice touch. Steaks were very nice and perfectly rare. Crepe suzette totally on the money, no uncooked creeps here, lovely and piping hot prepared at table. Wine list holds some inexpensive joys too.

“Fab Food”

Friendly knowledgable staff. Excellent food, well presented and our likes and dislikes on certain dishes easily adjusted and catered for.

“Some decent food, not worth 2 rosettes”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 23, 2012

We booked a table at Langley for a birthday and had visions of a posh 'foodie' evening. Some things were nice - our pigeon was cooked beautifully, the castle has a great décor, prices were reasonable (we're from Edinburgh). However…all in all, my partner and I both agreed the experience fell a bit flat on its face.

Save one lovely young food runner, our waitstaff seemed overwhelmed and clearly lacked silver-service training and food knowledge. Nobody could answer questions about the food, nor was it presented with any explanation as to what we'd been given. Our amuse bouche had clearly been prepped long before it made it to us and when it came tiem for wines there certainly wasn't a sommelier for miles, it was suggested we query at hotel reception if we wanted an opinion on wine! Silver cutlery was tarnished and not polished, we were sat in an empty restaurant next to another couple - I asked if we could move and we were told the place was fully booked for the night - guess what, it wasn't! There wasn't a manger anywhere to be found, and most troublingly the surprise dessert plate I'd called ahead to order for my partner's birthday was completely forgotten and the message hadn't even made it to the night staff (mind, we were given bubbly to make this up, but only after pointing out the issue)!

I doubt this was a one-off night and fear the restaurant in Langley has prior been judged on location and visual impact, not on sheer food quality. If you want a stunning meal, you'll not find it here.

In short: some decent food, not worth the 2 rosettes - try the Battlesteads in Wark, THAT is quality food!

“Fantastic venue”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 19, 2012

Wedding anniversary weekend in the best room in the castle, four poster bed & sauna in huge bathroom. The room was clean, well presented with the usual refinements you would expect from a top quality hotel.
Beautiful meal in the restaurant which had a nice relaxed atmosphere, attentive friendly staff.
The drawing room is nicely set out for drinks from the bar and the breakfasts are huge and of fantastic quality.
This is not a cheap weekend away but worth every penny, you get what you pay for!

“Afternoon Tea from Christmas gift voucher”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 18, 2012

Our afternoon tea was very nice - they catered for vegetarian options and offered a good selection of sandwiches, cakes and hot scones - good value for money. The only way for wheelchair users to get upstairs to main hall, was using the service lift which was dirty, old and antiquated, with behind the scenes clutter, dirty linen and plates in access corridors, which takes away from an otherwise very special experience.
Lovely gift to receive and the mums loved it!
