“Wonderful Skiwee program (snacks are peanut and tree nut safe)”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 26, 2012

We took our son for skiwee lessons at Shawnee and he loves them. The staff are friendly, knowledgeable, and def have a passion for teaching young ones how to ski. The " Honey bowl" is a separate area for the little ones to learn without the worry of being mowed down by other skiers, close to the lodge where you can come out and peek on them, and close to the the equipment rental.. No long walks to anywhere for them. The 3hr lessons are just right and my son has already gained a lot of basic skills and a love for the sport. The bunny hill is just to the right of the honey bowl so they can practice what they have learned after the lessons. They do have snack time and all the snacks are peanut and tree nut safe (great to know for those with kids who have these allergies). The Ski area is very family friendly and well maintained. Parking is free and not a far walk from the base. I would say this is the best ski area around for those with wee ones.

“Not what I expected, bad layout”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 25, 2012

Went to this skiing area on Wed, Feb 22, 2012. My sister picked it because she thinks it's great for beginners. Since it's her daughters first time skiing.
Anyway there were four of us. 2 adults and 2 kids. The staff were very friendly, instructors were nice...but the layout of the slopes I didn't like. The lifts for the green slopes were all the way at the other end of the resort. I had to carry 3 sets of skis because the 2 kids couldn't make it to the other end (with skis on ) where the lifts for the green were. Anyway after we skied down the slope which goes diagonally to the other end. When we reached the bottom, my niece wanted to go again. So guess what, I had to carry her skis to the other side just to get on the lifts to the green again. After we came down again, I was too tired to walk to the other side.
Next time I think we'll go to Camelback or JFBB. I want to ski not walk.

“Felt taken care of as a beginner!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 22, 2012

Pros: great snowboarding instructors (2 lessons, 2 different guys), small group instruction, kind staff, good slope packages (ie 2 day Vacationer package for beginners--2 consecutive days of each--lift tix, rentals & lessons for $170)
Cons: bunny hill is HUGE, adults (particularly) get a bit reckless on it, not enough slope security (although we were there during the week of Feb break)

Overall--super place for my first shot at riding!

“Family Friendly - Great for beginners”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 21, 2012

Went here for President's Day weekend with a family of novice/beginner skiers. Kids did the ski school and we also took group lessons. Everyone there was super-friendly and willing to help. Nick, our ski instructor was very patient with us and really helped us improve our skiing. The kids LOVED the ski school and came out super-confident and flashing off their new skills. At the end of the program the kids get a "report card" and the instructors talked to us about what each child was excelling at and what they needed to work on - really excellent program and worth the money.

It does get a bit crowded, especially on the training hill, so best bet is to get there during a slower time, however it didn't impact our fun at all as we expected the crowds going in.

“Good for skiing, snow tubing is a waste of money and time!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 21, 2012

We were a bunch of 8 and we had gone to Shawnee Ski area. We purchased the beginner's skiing package as well as snow tubing slots. If its your first time skiing, it seems daunting and one should be prepared for multiple falls. Don't worry, the snow acts as a good cushion. When we went there it was all artificial snow but the ski areas were really nicely done. One advice - try to take a morning or early afternoon slot for ski lessons. We took the late afternoon one and by then we were so tired that it was difficult to do justice to skiing. Snow tubing was a big disappointment!! The slope is straight with no twists and turns. Also the whole task of taking the tube up to the top was cumbersome and tiring. Not worth our time or money. Wish we had chucked it and simply skied all day long. Overall its a fun place for skiing!
