You're stepping into a Texarkana BBQ shack in this funky/sophisticated "joint" where pulled pork and BBQ chicken come served with two sides and a biscuit. Everything is super casual with mismatched tables and chairs, bold colors, blackboard menu, paper towels (for napkins), "Old Glory" next to an iconic red Coke machine, and tin serving trays heaped with paper pates of food that have a certain prison chic. It is a refreshing change of scene.
The food ranges from really, really good to just okay. After four outings, we strongly recommend the pulled pork, the chili, the mac & cheese, and the sweet potato casserrole. The BBQ chicken, sausage and sweet potato fries are also good. The brisket is only okay. We found the ribs to be on the tough and dry side and the cole slaw to be seriously under seasoned. Each table has a bottle of extra sauce, and a Hoosier Cabinet in the corner contains other help-yourself condiments.
There are a variety of sandwiches, salad plates and mix-and-match combo platters that are ordered at the counter and brought to your table.
Naturally, it is a hit with people looking to take the kids somewhere besides the usual fast food places. But, the combination of good food, moderate prices and an offbeat atmosphere attract a nice cross-section of customers.
