“5 Star accommodations without the elegance”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 1, 2013

We stopped at Donegal to spend the night on our way to Philly. We were to stay elsewhere, but got a late start. We were so impressed with this hotel: the most comfortable bed we've slept in in a long time, including our own, with choices of pillow firmness, plush towels, lovely comfortable room and bathroom, delicious complimentary breakfast with lots of choices, clean and last but not least, very friendly staff! We are AAA members and hope you have at least 3 diamonds if not more!

4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 31, 2013

We stayed one night. Got here late in the evening so we got one of the last rooms I’m sure. We asked for a room on opposite side of highway and she said they were all taken up. SO we got a room on the 3rd floor facing highway. The nice thing is that you cannot hear any road noise! However, we were on the 3rd floor which is the top floor and there was this annoying sound ALL NIGHT long!! It sounded like a motor or fan and it sounded to come from the ceiling area. I thought maybe the room next door left their bathroom fan on cause ours was loud when it was on (and it goes on automatically when you turn light on in bathroom which was annoying too cause it was so loud!)...

anyway, the only other complaint I have is the elevator here. When we arrived we rode the elevator up to 3rd floor with our gear. we noticed a paper sign taped outside the elevator that said when it gets too much use it over heats and stops working!!! ok...so 15 minutes after we dropped off bags we went to leave to get food...ummm, that one elevator ride up must have been too much because it was NOT WORKING!!!! It did not work the rest of the night! we had to go up and down the fire stairs. It was pretty quiet in hotel when we got there, so I know a bunch of people did not ride it in the 15 minutes after we took it....so that was annoying.

We ate at a bar & grille down the road called The Main Event and I have to say I was afraid cause the outside looked kind of not inviting, but it was clean and nice inside and the food was very good for the most part, all except their wings....don't get ANY of the wing flavors, you will be highly disappointed, I promise.

Back to H.I. Express, the pool was nice looking but we did not use it. The decor when you walk in is a hunter's cabin feel, we liked it, cozy warm feel. there is a TV and couch and chairs where a bunch of people were watching football in the evening in the breakfast area, we joined in and it was fun.

Breakfast is your typical free b-fast food. I liked the biscuits. the kids love the pancake maker. the staff seemed nice. I would stay here again despite the elevator, only because I am sure it is one of the nicest (few) places in the area. We went to 7-springs to ski early the next day, it was about 20 minutes away.

First, I would like to thank you for your awesome review. It is very detailed and we appreciate it very much. I would like to apologize for the inconvenience with the noise and the elevator. We are in the process of having the elevator inspected to see what options we have available to fix the issue. Happy to hear you were able to enjoy some of the attractions and restaurants in the area. We hope to see you again on your next visit to the Laurel Highlands.

I stayed for one night on a business trip in January. I was having issues with my rental car when I checked in. The two women at the check in counter checked me in very quickly and efficiently and also had a map to the nearest enterprise within a couple mintes. My experience with the staff was excellent during my stay. The surroundings are very comfortable. Nice and clean as well. I would definitely return.

I spent one night at this hotel during January of 2013. I was driving west on the Turnpike and a snowstorm started when we reached Somerset. We ran into a blizzard/whiteout, and I began researching for a nearby hotel because we were desperate for a place to stay for the night. We were scheduled to drive another ten hours, but I called the Holiday Inn Express in Donegal to reserve a room because we were cold and too scared to continue our drive.

This hotel is glorious.

I have traveled all around the world, and the HIE in Donegal is one of the cleanest, cutest, most wonderful hotels I've encountered. The room was spotless, the staff was sympathetic and helpful, the free breakfast was delicious (FREE PANCAKES), and it is designed like a ski lodge so it's adorable. Even the shower pressure was wonderful. This hotel proved to be a godsend for some terrified travelers on the Turnpike, and I can't praise it enough.

Room Tip: All the rooms are good. Best hotel in Pennsylvania!

Our family spent two nights here for our Christmas. We felt we got a wonderful deal: huge breakfast, big rooms with two queen-sized beds, decorated festively for Christmas, bog pool and hot tub, exercise room, great hall for games and unwrapping gifts, attentive staff, clean, warm cookies, apples, drinks available all day, ski lodges near...... This took the stress and work out of Christmas in family homes.

Room Tip: Nice view on upper level. Check for low prices. My big room was only $108 plus tax as I remember.

We traveled from Philadelphia over the long Tanksgiving weekend to attend a relative's wedding in Pittsburg. The hotel's location in Donnegal, PA put us about 1 hour east of Pittsburgh, and thus reduced the travel time home. I called ahead and asked if it was possible to check in a little earlier than usual as we had to get dressed for the wedding. The hotel graciously accommodated our request. Upon arrriving, we discovered that they had upgraded our room to a wonderfully large suite with a king sized bed, a living room, and a small kitchenette area. What a nice gesture! The bedding was very nice, although the pillows could have been more comfortable. TV, bathroom, and heat were all perfect. The breakfast area is very large, and featured a wide selection of breakfast items from sausage and scrambled eggs, to fresh pancakes made to order, yogurt, juices, toast and hot beverages. The hotel is nicey appointed in a rustic lodge style, and features a lobby diorama of woodland animals and deer. We really enjoyed our stay, and the staff from the front desk to the breakfast area were very friendly and helpful!

Great new hotel that is like new with large size immaculate rooms and comfortable beds. Amble good food for beadfast and right off Interstate 76 and close to Pittsburgh. Professional Staff express mailed me mt favorite down pillow I left in room (sharp maid noticed it even though same white color as the hotel pillows).
