As mentioned in my earlier review from a few years ago, the Pine Barn Inn (not a Motel as some have written), is a nice clean quiet place in a peaceful town. Access to the Inn is easy from just about anywhere in the region. My wife and I usually visit Knoebels each summer for a few days and need a nice place to stay. We've been using Pine Barn Inn for the last several years.
Last year we were forced to stay in the older 200 building as the 300 building was closed for renovations. The room was older and showed its age some, but was clean and comfortable. This year we were able to reserve a room in the 300 building again as we had enjoyed our previous stay when we had a room in that building as its a little more convenient for us getting in and out and going to the restaurant.
I have to say the renovations, that in my opinion were not needed, were a huge mistake. In previous years the beds were soft and comfortable, and had thick comfortable linens. Sadly, this year, the new beds are like laying on a stiff board. I found myself having to splay my legs out and tuck my arms in front of my body to keep from rolling over. You could feel the springs if you ran your hand down the side of the bed. These mattresses were cheap bottom of the line junk. Also, the linens went from nice thick soft linens to Value City specials. Thin, uncomfortable, and ugly. Who the heck was doing the purchasing decisions for the renovations??? Whom ever it is they should be fired. The rooms also offer very nice wood furniture and plush carpeting. This is still the case, but the nice up scale chair to match the desk was replaced with a cheap modern mesh thing that did not match at all, and frankly looked like crap. Again, who was making the buying decisions for the renovations??? Horrible!!
Other than the uncomfortable beds, cheap linens, and ugly desk chair that did not match, the room was quiet, clean, and comfortable. Nice big flat screen TV, a mini-Fridge, and plenty of pillows. Rates are quite reasonable compared to some of the other accommodations in the area that are dumps and charge the same or a lot more.
We did figure out the curtains, the sun shield will pull closed, you have to pull back the sheer and look back behind the curtain panel to find the pulls. The toilets are still too small. I don't know how any adult can sit comfortably on them, they are sized more for a child and felt like you were sitting on a bicycle seat with a hole in it. This was another missed opportunity during the renovations. These should have been ripped out, and nice oval bowl Kohler toilets installed so an adult can actually get their bottom onto the seat.
The restaurant, as mentioned before, is very convenient being just footsteps outside the 300 buildings door. The food is made to order, and is delicious. Prices are quite reasonable. Service was prompt and courteous. They are building a new event hall next door, so now they will not have to block off an already smallish dining room to set up for a wedding or other similar events.
Over all, we still like the Pine Barn Inn a lot. Its location, safety, cleanliness, and reasonable prices are still worth us booking here. Just be aware that the beds are now stiff as a board, and uncomfortable, the linens are cheap and thin, and the desk chair is hideous. Oh, and the PC in the office center is getting old and needs to be replaced. I could not do anything except read documents on there. Trying to do anything animated requiring a Flash Player bogged it down terribly. A re-renovation is definitely in order to fix the horrible mistakes of the recently completed last one.
