Our stay while overall satisfactory had it’s ups and downs. The staff were sincerely cheerful and caring. They made us feel welcome and valued as guests. Although there were many little maintenance items that need addressing, the response I received to my “customer survey” assured me that renovation was due to begin in November! Everything was immaculately clean, except the coffeemaker which could easily be overlooked. The location is convenient, but tucked into an odd bit of real-estate.
The lobby / dining area and halls although a bit dark and dated were otherwise quite presentable. The first thing we noticed on entering the room was a bed that looked like a landscape of hills. Upon investigation we found it was the “duvet comforter”-- fortunately not the bed itself. Staff advised us that this was supposed to be “like sleeping on a cloud,” however, it was more like a grid of sand-filled pockets. They did find us a newer, less lumped-up replacement. The bed itself was not at all “like a cloud,” more like a platform on springs hard and bouncy. OK for a single sleeper who likes the mattress FIRM.
The rest of the room had multiple maintenance flaws: Once opened the accordion closet door refused to close; The desk lamp outlet was loose and falling out; The bathroom sink drained so slowly brushing one’s teeth was a bit disgusting; There were no markings left on the shower controller; The upholstery on the desk chair was torn; and The in-room heater/cooler positively stank so badly when were turned it on so we decided we could do without! We would have asked for a different room or even left had it been winter.
Everything about the room was clean, except the coffee maker. The water receptacle looked dirty, and left a brown scum on the tissue I used to wipe it out. I suspect a previous guest poured coffee (instead of plain water) through it. Not having noticed until we got up, we skipped the in-room coffee.
Morning breakfast buffet was very ordinary and would have been better if they had put out less hot food more often, instead of letting it get dried out. It was adequate, though, and handy for a “quick getaway.” Had we been interested in a more leisurely, sit-down, full breakfast, we would have tried the restaurant across the highway with a reputation for “The Best Breakfasts in PA.”
An unusual aspect of the motel’s location is not at all under their control, but makes for a surreal experience. At the bottom of their hillside driveway there were not one, but two derelict gas stations. Also, this driveway is shared with a gravel yard next door. Sound proofing is very good as we barely heard the equipment, and it made for an interesting view from our window. The other side of the building looks out over a narrow woods which separates it from the highway. It is easily accessed from several major roadways.
All this place needs is the promised renovation, and more attention to maintenance in the future. We probably wouldn’t go back until after the renovation, mostly because of the bad heater. We won’t hesitate to return later, try out the breakfast place, and see their “new look.”
