“Cafeteria food is much better than this "Mexican" place.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed May 19, 2013

Stopped for lunch today after driving by there many times on our travels and hearing how they are the "best in Montco County". The first tip off should have been that they did not answer the phone five minutes before opening for the day.

Its bad when you can't distinguish a tamale from an enchilada on your plate. The beef was soggy and unseasoned= bland and tasted more like a loose meat sandwich than like seasoned mexican food. The chorizo tasted frozen/cooked and had a funny OFF flavor to it. Not appealing at all.
Rice was a joke, it was colorful but flavorless & tasted worse than Uncle Ben's 90 second pouch rice you buy at a store. The enchilada sauce was nothing more than some sort of watered down tomatoe product= no flavor and smelled, in fact, like Italian food when it hit the table. It was worse than canned enchilada sauces I've had from stores. The $3.25 cheese sauce is canned nacho cheese sauce you can buy at BJ's- gross, doesn't taste like "velveeta" as the waitress said. Not that velveeta is at all authentic for queso, but this place doesn't even try. No hot sauce on the tables, you have to ASK for it, almost as though you're being rationed. It comes in this tiny cup and boy, whatever was in it was gut-turning. I took a dip of it and never went back for more- YUCK.

Service was a lukewarm reception from the older lady. It seemed like we were more a nuisance to her time than a customer who tips. Then- and this was what cemented the entire experience- they made it clear at the time of paying the check (was not posted ANYWHERE) that there is a FEE to use your credit card. As a business, that is something that you need to adjust your prices to reflect that expense, not something you surprise your customers with at time of payment.

If they keep running the place as is, it won't be there for long and based on the experience today, thats a good thing. Keep driving and find another place to eat, your pocket and taste buds will thank you later.

“They skimp on nothing”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 7, 2013

I travel to Mexico (I am not of Spanish decent at all) for business about 5 or 6 weeks a year. Is Tortuga's just like what I get there? Yes, it really is. The menu choices are somewhat limited, but it is the best place I know of for what Americans consider Mexican food.

That means it is pretty much limited to Burritos, Taco, and Enchiladas. These are all authentically made and almost over-stuffed with meat.

Now that they can serve drinks, I am not ever a BYOB person, it really is a great place to go for good food at a reasonable price.

We have eaten here probably 5 or 6 times a year for the last 10 years or so. Now that they have a liquor license, who knows might be 10 or more this year.

“Go California Burrito!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 25, 2013

Tortuga's is a very casual Mexican restaurant in a strip center in Collegeville. The decor isn't much, the menu is pretty standard fare and they've recently acquired a liquor license. Pretty plain jane looking place (buy a sombrero for a few bucks). Complimentary chips (first bowl free) served with housemade salsa (good and hot).

Margaritas (frozen or not) - house, patron, 1800, choice of flavors. Beer - bottled.

As I said, standard mexican fare. I thoroughly enjoy the ground beef California Burrito. Large enough, covered in a red sauce and sprinkled with cheese.

We visit here about 1/2 dozen times a year. Friday evenings can be a little on the crowded side. Great place for kids.

“Great Food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 22, 2013

Food is great. This was my second time there and I will be back as often as I can. I had the burritos and tacos and I liked them. The salsa was great. They could use some more larger seating tables.

“Mexican-themed food...not Mexican food”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 18, 2013

Food was very good at this restaurant, but if you're looking for authentic Mexican food, don't go here. The chips and salsa that they give you to munch on while you wait for your food was very tasty, but the portion size was kind of small for two people. The first round of chips and salsa is on the house, but if you want more, it's $2.50... REAL Mexican restaurants ALWAYS have horchata as a beverage option...this place didn't. However, I was quite surprised that they had Jarritos, another Mexican restaurant staple. I ordered the chimichangas which were served with beans and rice. They were really. Although the food was good and the service was really good, I don't think I'd go again, only because when I go to a Mexican restaurant, I prefer authentic. Prices were a bit pricey for me, but portions were a good size, so it wasn't too bad.
