We got a real good feeling about the Whip the moment we drove up to this lovely English style pub. Be prepared, the parking lot is quite small and hard to maneuver but in no way does this take away from this overall excellent restaurant in the country. While not difficult to find, it is out-of-the-way. We felt it was worth the 1 hour and 45 minute drive from our home in Schuylkill County. The atmosphere is rustic, noisy and crowded but more importantly lively and friendly.
We were immediately greeted by the barmaid who served up ice cold draft beer and added our name to the list for a table. At the Whip it is first come first served, no reservations. Although there are not many seats in the dining area, our wait felt relatively short mainly because everyone was so friendly around the bar and waiting area.
Our waiter was fantastic! The menu offers such a variety of dishes it was hard to make a choice. Since there were 3 of us in our party we went all out and ordered 3 appetizers, 3 different entrees and 3 desserts. The Welsh Rarebit is a must. Our feast also included the Smoked Fish Plate and Bubble and Squeak, Braised Beef Ribs cooked to perfection, Fish and Chips and Bangers and Mash. Each dish was exquisitely prepared and very delicious. Did I mention that our waiter was fantastic? We selected 3 desserts made inhouse: Creme Brulee, Mango Cheesecake and Sticky Toffee Pudding. Superb! Superb! Superb!
The menu also lists different weekend specials, each different for each weekend of the month. We were there on the 3rd weekend. So, if you love it as much as I do here is a tip. Beef Wellington is weekend #4. I also noticed a delicious looking burger at the next table as well as a very fine looking juicy steak.
On the way home we talked about what we were going to order the next time we visit The Whip.
I'm sure we will be making the drive again very soon.
One final remark. Although there were a number of young children with their families on Sunday evening, for me, The Whip is not someplace I would recommend for small children. But hey, to each his own.
