I enjoy Panera Bread for a good cup of coffee and a cinnamon chip scone. It's a nice place to sit and sip and converse with a friend or loved one.
Ideally located amongst shopping in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, Panera Bread is located on Norland Avenue, right off of Walker Road. Upon arriving, the slightly cramped parking lot awaits you, wrapping around two sides of the restaurant. There is an overflow lot adjacent to the building, which I recommend on busy days, or for larger vehicles.
The staff are ready to help you order if you aren't familiar with Panera's. They all seem to know their stuff. Most of them are friendly enough, but nothing spectacular. The place runs efficiently, and even on a busy Friday afternoon during holiday shopping time, you can move right along from ordering to receiving your food.
Panera's menu is nice and large, viewable from anywhere in the entrance area. The registers are a bit packed together, making it a little crowded during ordering.
Panera's prices are higher than you may expect, but so is the food quality. You can spend more than you may want on a meal or snack, but you will likely not regret it. I love their broccoli cheese soup, it is divine. You get a hearty bowl that fills you up well. The food is made quickly and just as you want it, providing a healthy meal.
What I really enjoy about Panera is their coffee and a scone. When you walk in the door, baked goods entice you and any semblance of a diet is left outside. You smell the coffee, which is right by the registers. I like how they note what time the coffee was brewed, so you know. And it's always fresh. They constantly make more coffee to ensure it is fresh and the best tasting.
Panera Bread offers dine-in guests a ceramic mug for coffee, if you so choose. This can be nice, sitting down and sipping from a mug rather than a paper cup. But if you plan to take your coffee with you, you can get a paper version in three sizes, from $1.79.
Their freshly brewed coffees come in several options. A light roast, a dark roast, decaf, and hazelnut. It is very lovely coffee. The dark roast is indeed dark, but not a bit bitter and is smooth and flavorful. Hazelnut packs a good bit of flavor, and is really good mixed in with the regular dark roast. They also offer specialty hot drinks much like any coffee shop would, all around $4.00.
A cinnamon chip scone tops off your afternoon coffee well. Tasty and fresh, this scone is a fairly hefty snack for one person, or a nice nibble shared.
If you are dining in, you have your choice of places to sit. Tables and booths fill the area, some offering a bit more privacy with walls around them. From seating for two to larger seating options, the restaurant can accommodate most party sizes.
The decor is nice earth tones, reds, yellows, and browns. They've packed quite a few tables into the place, which is good considering how busy it can get. An outdoor seating area is available for nice days.
A few areas inside offer plush chairs to sit in, with tables. This is great when just having a cup of coffee and maybe a snack, you can sit back and relax. But those chairs are in need of replacement or serious cleaning, because the arms are getting funky. I wouldn't touch them with the hand you're eating with.
As for the cleanliness of the rest of the restaurant, I always notice bits of food on the floor, and a couple of dirty tables. It almost seems that the employees never get a chance to tidy up when it is busy, which is often. I've never seen anything totally gross, though. Utensils, mugs, and plates always appear to be clean, as do the beverage stations. Trash is kept well maintained and so are the dirty dish disposal areas.
Overall, Panera Bread in Chambersburg, PA is a great spot for lunch, dinner, or just a coffee. It's nice to sit inside and look out of the numerous windows at shoppers and motorists heading to their destinations. There's always something to watch. The coffee is fresh and delicious, desserts are very appealing, and the food is of great quality. If you don't mind a higher cost now and then, stop by!
