We stayed here for a weekend of holiday sightseeing in the Brandywine Valley. The inn is perfectly located for visiting Winterthur and Longwood Gardens. When we arrived a light snowfall had dusted the grounds of the inn and the exteriors of the buildings were lit up with Christmas lights. It was really very lovely.
We stayed in Carriage House 1. Overall we really liked the room, it was not overly decorated, as some b&bs can be, and there was plenty of space to spread out. A 20 foot high wall made a dramatic backdrop for the bed and the view off the deck into a field was very nice. A sitting area with a love seat and wing chairs was just in front of a gas fireplace. Not mentioned on the website was the fact that even though the room is on the first floor it was constructed in such a way that there were no rooms (and thus no footsteps) above, this made for a very, very quiet room. We slept great. A couple of complaints about the room though—information on the inn’s website was not entirely accurate. According to the inn’s reservation page the room’s bathroom was newly decorated and it featured a two-person shower. Since this was mentioned in the context of renovations of the entire room I took this to mean that the bathroom was newish—it wasn’t. It was fine but definitely had some wear. The two-person shower was also an overstatement—the shower is technically large enough to fit two people but one showerhead does not a two-person shower make. Finally, the bedding really needs to be replaced. There were plenty of pillows, lots of nice towels, and quality robes, but the sheets and blankets were more suited to Motel 6 than a nice inn. The sheets were basic percale and the old acrylic blanket on our bed had clearly seen better days. A nice duvet would have been more in line with the rest of the inn's style.
The main building of the inn was tastefully decorated and had a wood burning fireplace. There was a good selection of current magazines, games, books and information on local attractions and menus from a lot of local restaurants. There was also a laptop available to check email. The food service—teatime and breakfast --were both great. Between 4 and 6 there was a selection of teas, homemade baked goods (kudos to the baker), and a cheese and fruit plate. Breakfast featured a choice of three entrees (fancy pancakes, a fancy omelet or eggs and breakfast meat) table service and a buffet with fresh fruit salad, cereals, yogurts, breads. Everything we ate was really tasty.
All of the staff we met were very friendly without being intrusive. No problems with billing, reserving or registration/checkout. Overall a good place to stay. The current innkeepers only took over six months ago and I’m sure they’ll put their own stamp on the property soon. We would stay there again if we came back to visit this region.
