“Fore!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 16, 2007

Just returned from a week's stay at Whispering Woods. We had a 2 bedroom plus loft unit in the St Andrews complex. Overall we had a good stay. Things were good and bad.

Pros:
Nicely decorated rooms. Fresh paint, new marble tile in the bathroom. Very clean.
Newer sectional couch with fold out bed.
Well equipped kitchen.
Quiet residential area.
Large, new woodstove, nice touch for winter.
Warm pool.
Private garage.

Cons:
Missing some finishing touches: no tools for the BBQ, no extra trash bags or any dishwasher detergent.
Hard beds
Thin blankets, hope they give you more in the winter.
Pool is much smaller than it looks in the pictures. 3 families and it is crowded.
Shower faucet squeeled like a tea kettle.
No AC. It was 88 degrees when we were visiting.

Big Con! The condo's overlook another resort's golf course. The rooms are right on the course! Each unit has a 4 ft. deck seperated on each side by 15 foot tall nets but open to the front with steps leading down to a gravel path and out to the course. There is a big sign in each room that says you are not allowed to walk on the path or go on the course. Also it warns not to use the patio if golfers are present. Problem was they were always present. My two boys were dying to play on that lush green lawn but couldn't. The few times they did sneak out there they were admonished by passing golfers or maintenace people. With no other lawn space or play areas except the pool which was a 3 block walk away, it meant I had two active boys bouncing around the room on nice sunny days.

This would be a great place for adults who plan to be out of the room most of the day. I can't say I suggest it for families with young kids.

If your into the outdoor recreational activities like golf, skiing, hiking etc.. this is the place for you. We are shell vacation owners and had some points to burn so we decided to do a ski weekend at WW. Location was everything.. Just 20 minutes from the Mt. Hood ski resorts. Rooms are fairly up to date, nothing to brag about. If you plan to stay at the WW, I recommend the short drive to Calamity Jane's for their famous hamburgers(located 16 miles west of WW on highway 26).

We used our Shell Vacation Club points to stay at the Whispering Woods, near Mt. Hood in Oregon. It was our first experience with Shell and our first stay at Whispering Woods. We were very pleased with the experience.

Whispering Woods is about 45 minutes from Portland, driving towards Mt. Hood. As you leave the city behind, you notice the small towns and lots of Christmas tree farms that dot the roadside. Roll down your windows and smell the air - a wonderful pine scent. Being from Phoenix, we were so happy to see green everywhere, rivers and streams and nice cool, clean mountain air.

Our one bedroom unit at Whispering Woods was pleasanty comfortable for our 9 day stay. It felt like we were staying in an apartment, more than a hotel room. The room (D5) had a washer/dryer, a full kitchen (fridge, oven, microwave, dishwasher, pots/pans, etc.), a gas fire place, two TV's, and a gas grill on the balcony overlooking the woods by the golf course.

At the clubhouse, there is a heated outdoor swimming pool and a hot tub that operates at the same time as the clubhouse 8am-8pm. The girls that worked the front desk during the weekends were very friendly and pleasant.

Outside our door, there was a hiking trail that leads to the Salmon river. It's about a 5 minute walk, that takes you through some woods and a golf course. We could hear the river from our front door! It is a beautiful river!
Since Whispering Woods seems to be like a 'sister' complex to the larger Inn at the Mountain - a golf resort, you are likely (as we did) to see lots of golfers around the property. Indeed, part of our nightly walks, were around the residentual homes that overlook the golfcourse. The residentual properties near that surround Whipsering Woods make you feel like you are 'at home' while on vacation.

There is no restaurant or 24 hr service at Whispering Woods. For that, a stay at the Inn at the Mountain would be more appropriate. Maybe we were a bit naive, but the only thing we were surprised about was the fact that there is no day to day housekeeping during your (our) stay. If you want somebody to pick up after you, I guess you need to stay at the Inn at the Mountain. This wasn't a big issue for us, we just wished we knew about it beforehand - so now YOU know!

There is a TON os activities to do around Whelches. We visited the Timberline Lodge near the summit of Mt. Hood (only a 30 minute drive from Whispering Woods) and had a snow ball fight (in mid September!). We drove to Bend, Oregon (2 hours), took the Mt. Hood scenic train ride (about an hour drive from Whispering Woods) and enjoyed Multnomah (sp?) Falls, the Columbia River Gorge and watching tha salmon at the Bonneville (sp?) dam fish ladder.

These are all easy day to half day trips from Whispering Woods. We enjoyed our stay, and loved Oregon. Ussually at the end of a vacation, we are ready to go home. This time, we wished we could have stayed!
