“Nice view and good price...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 17, 2013

No, it's not a resort but for the price, we thought it was just fine. We had a great view and could drive to yachats and newport quickly. We were able to bring our dogs which is a bonus for us. It's nothing fancy but it was clean and nice for the price.

Room Tip: Top floor down towards the end has great views...

I recently stayed at the hotel with friends for weekend courses on cooking organic, sugar free, gluten free, and dairy free meals. The food was amazing, but I ended up getting much more than cooking out of the experience. It was about connecting to food, yourself, and the land. The hotel was not flashy or luxurious, but the accommodations and the amazing location bring a sense of simplicity and connection to nature. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. The yoga instructor was awesome. It is a short walk to an amazing beach. I would go back any day.

I recently stayed at the Soul Retreat after taking a drive out to the coast. I had never been to Waldport before but found it to be a great location. Just a short drive to the aquarium, Newport, Yahats and not too far from Lincoln City shopping.
The staff at the hotel were extremely friendly and helpful pointing out where I might like to go exploring and for a meal while there kitchen was getting redone. The view from my room faced the bay which was very calming and I never slept better. The bed was awesome!
The manager explained to me that the hotel was undergoing a complete renovation and would soon boast a 5 star restaurant, upgraded rooms and a number of other services more in line with a spa retreat. It sounded wonderful and I look forward to the changes.
All in all, for a place where I was just hoping to get a clean room and a good nights sleep, I was pleasantly surprised by the whole experience. I would definitely recommend to anyone who is driving on the coast or simply looking for a nice place to relax.

My wife and I have yet to decide on this one. Soul Vacations is a very strange place. We stayed there Valentines weekend and it was all but deserted. We saw only the hotel clerk the evening we checked in, never anyone else. The weather was bad and the sky dark which gave the halls a "Shining" feeling. They advertise Soul Vacations as a yoga, soul renewing health hotel. However, our room looked like a set from a low-budget 1970's porn movie. Lots of mirrored walls and a large, oddly lit hot tub. The finish work was poorly done and the room had an unfinished feel to it.
Even though we had no bad experiences here, we will probably not stay again nor recommend it.

I stayed at the Soul Retreat about a month ago for 5 days. I was told upon check-in that the retreat was under new management, and that if I needed anything at all, to please let them know, as they would do their very best to accommodate me. The hotel is very very clean, probably the cleanest hotel I have stayed in over the past 5 years. (and I am including very expensive hotels in San Francisco as well as Seattle). The room I stayed in faced the beautiful bay, was very very quiet, the bed was incredibly comfortable, the water pressure was excellent, and there was plenty of hot water! I met the new team over the course of my stay, and they were very kind and very helpful when I had questions about the area or inquired about the hotel itself. It sounds like they were quite thrilled with the new changes being made on site, and that there were many services being added soon that would focus on the "retreat" side of the experience. They also notified me that their once famous restaurant was going to be opening again very soon (by early Summer?), and that it was going to be incredible. I found this hotel/retreat center to be a most pleasant surprise, and I am planning on another trip in June. Can't beat a pleasant staff, a wonderful stay right on the bay, and an escape to the coast that leaves you well rested and feeling genuinely cared for. Highly recommend!

Room Tip: Ask for bay view if they have one available, so gorgeous! Upper floor always better if you can get...

My cousins and I spent our annual cousin reunion at Soul Vacation last month. We traveled as much as 700 miles to get here. The resort is under new management and the kitchen had not yet opened for the season. This was perfectly fine with us as we were there for a food retreat and we had uninterrupted use of their commercial kitchen. The new staff was very accommodating. Our room was cozy but we didn't spend much time there as we were in the kitchen, the yoga room or on the beach most of our weekend! If you get a chance to participate in a food retreat at Soul Vacation, do it!!! The price was well worth the rejuvenation of our souls. The new management is definitely in alignment with the name of the resort! I will most definitely be back and look forward to the next chapter of Soul Vacation Resort!!

The Oregon Coast is beautiful, but the whole area reflects a blighted economy. Apparently, the managment does not have much to choose from when it runs its Want Ads. I called this hotel first on a Saturday night and was given a price of a double queen room that I felt was a bit out of line. I was told that the motel down the road was cheaper if that was what I was looking for. I called the next night and was given a higher price for the same room on a Sunday night. I knew this had to be wrong and I said so. I asked for AAA rates and was told that they didn't have them. Then was offered a queen room (standard) with a view of the parking lot. When I got there a very unfriendly woman gave me the key to the room. I asked where it was in relation to the parking lot and she told me it was in the middle of the hotel. It was in fact at the very end of the hotel. The hotel was literally empty and there were over a hundred rooms but she couldn't give me a room over looking the water. When I got up to the room and tried to use the internet I found that the woman at the front desk had mispelled (horribly) the internet password. It was supposed to be Namaste, but she spelled it Nastame. How can someone who works for a hotel that supposedly specializes in Indian food and yoga mispell Namaste? Fine, I can live with that. But in the morning a man (the maintenance man) accosted me in the parking lot and yelled at me for having my service dog in the room. The woman at the front desk told me that I was in the computer from the last time I stayed there, and the fact that I am disabled and own a service dog is in there. The man said he would have to shampoo the carpets and it would cost extra money and he wouldn't charge me this time (he couldn't I already paid), but he yelled at me that this was going to cost him a lot of extra money. I left the room clean. I even folded my dirty towels and threw away my used toiletries. This man was confrontational and his behavior was inexcusable. There is no continental breakfast, not even a donut or coffee and cream. You get a coffee maker and some coffee in the room, period, no fridge no microwave. There's no vending machine, and town is a drive, maybe 15 minutes. So if you get hungry in the middle of the night, forget it. There's nothing open at night in town anyway. They give you an iron a board, but why? I'd rather eat.

Room Tip: Don't stay here

Annie M, General Manager at Alsi Resort, responded to this review, May 12, 2013
Hello Ariana,

I'm very sorry to have heard about your experience at Soul Vacation Resort. As the new General Manager, it is ultimately my responsibility to ensure that we do our best to exceed guest expectations.

Your situation was brought to my attention recently, so I investigated. My understanding, based on conversations with the staff directly related to your experience and my review of our lobby, hallway, and parking lot security cameras which capture both visual and audio, is not that you had dogs (we are a pet-friendly resort), but that you didn't make us aware of them. While owners of service animals do not need to provide documentation, nor pay any hotel-related fees pertaining to pets, it IS required that owners notify registration staff that an animal is in their possession. One of the reasons for this is that most hotels generally have designated pet-friendly rooms. This way, we can offer "allergen-free" rooms to guests who have animal allergies.

In your case, because you did not make us aware of your animals when checking in, you were given an allergen-free room. When our maintenance person noticed you putting your dogs into your car the next morning, he decided to educate you about our policy and responsibility. I am grateful that he put two and two together ... if he hadn't, the next guest to stay in your room may have experienced a severe allergy - a far worse situation, in my opinion, than not finding a bite to eat in town. Since your visit we have sanitized the room, which includes a specific treatment to carpets, mattress, linens, and drapes. We consider it a small price to pay to ensure the comfort and satisfaction of future guests.

In addition to this issue, I also take to heart your remarks about Waldport's economic health. You are absolutely correct in your assessment that it lacks business; as do most coastal towns during off-season months. Waldport is a thriving community that cares about its families, mom and pop businesses (I wonder if you noticed that there isn't a single "corporate" giant here - of which we're proud), and visitors. We like that nothing's open at night in the "winter" - it means we're home with our families. But come Summer, you'll find more to do, see, and taste then you probably have time for. I encourage you to give us and Waldport another try this summer - you just might have a different experience next time around. We're excited for our Grand Opening in June, and launching our new website and marketing materials which capture our new vision: health and wellness via real food, local sustainability, nature, and community.

I would also like to meet and personally thank you for providing me and the new staff an opportunity to educate ourselves about service animals. It created a fantastic discussion among us, and we all learned ways in which we could do things differently, as well as affirmed other choices we made.

Enjoy your week, Ariana.

Respectfully yours,

Annie McHale
