“Quirky but Great”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 2, 2013

We already had reservations for another hotel in Portland but didn't want to go there a day early and came across this unique historical hotel. None of the rooms have a phone or a TV and if you need the front desk you have to use your cell phone to call and request anything. The rooms were different and unique and if you didn't mind sharing a bathroom ala european style then you could save a 1/2 of the cost. The bar was friendly and cozy, the restaurant served pheominal food with great bloody marys for brunch! The outside firepit at night was a great gathering place for people to mingle and become acquainted, the wine cellar with the wine tastings was fun and the wine was very good. They have what they call a soaking pool that is salt water and is large enough for 50 people to soak in! They have various entertainment during the week from movies to music on different days so check ahead to see what you would like to partake in but best of all is the serenity and peacefullness you can experience without phones and TV's blaring in your ears!

So glad you stumbled upon us. We're definitely different. Our Bloody Mary's are a healthy dose of awesome! I agree.
See you again hopefully.

We spent one night at McMenamin's Edgefield before driving to Sisters, OR for our family vacation and it was a great first night! It's the former county poor house refurbished into a hotel and event venue. Read up on the history. It's very interesting.
And as beautiful as the grounds are and as many activities and experiences are offered, what I remember most is how this place has been transformed to almost celebrate the people who worked and resided there in the past. Without being overdone, artists have painted every possible inch with scenes and designs. It's amazing. My pictures came out too dark to share but you might find some on the internet.
Each room has a name on the door, presumably someone who stayed at the poor farm. Ours was the only lawyer known to have stayed there after coming into tough times. HIs story was painted on the walls. It's sounding gaudy but it was beautifully calligraphied and just fit perfectly.
We arrived late afternoon, checked in, found our room and the bathrooms at the ends of the hallways. I was a little put off about that at first but it wasn't bad. Actually fun for one night. Each of the two big bathrooms on the third floor had several private individual shower rooms with toilets, plug-ins, good lighting and big mirrors.
At a sunny outdoor garden/bar we had a glass (or two) of wine made on site. Then went down the street to the winery where a group of young wedding goers were doing a tasting at the small bar. We opted to listen to live music - can't remember the musician's name but last name Kreps - in a narrow windowed room/hallway between the wine vats. Great music and really interesting to see the winery workers move about the vats on the other side of the glass walls.
There is also a distillery on site. We ate in a cute old fashioned pub.
I feel like I can't do a just review because there is so much to do and experience that we didn't partake in because we left the next morning to make our drive to Sisters to meet the rest of our family. But we had a wonderful time. I would suggest researching the history, selecting the room that works for your special needs and going for it. Don't let the bathroom at the end of the hall scare you.
It's quite an experience!
AND don't leave without stopping at the gift shop where we bought homemade STILL WARM bread from the bakery. Just delicious!

Room Tip: The rooms are all different so ask questions when booking to get the space and bed configuration you...

We only visited here for dinner and drinks, but it was great! The brew pub behind the main building had awesome food and a great staff. We will be returning... so much to explore. I have heard the motel beds are not the best and no air conditioning, but the atmosphere of this place is amazing.

Thanks for stopping by, glad you enjoyed the facility. We've gone through a process of replacing virtually all beds in every room, so have spent time upgrading on that level. Next time you pass by if you're able to stay the night, test us out.
Thanks again,
Owen Craig

We had a great lunch on the patio. I had the hamburger with blue cheese and my husband had the Reuban..food was great and our server Ryan was exceptional. I had a nice glass of red wine and we enjoyed the surroundings of the great place..Although we didn't stay, the lodge looked great and the indoor restaurant and brewery were full of people..we hope to go back and stay there on our next trip..they also have golf greens there..

Room Tip: This is a large property...they have everything...looked like someone was getting ready for a reunio...

My wife and I love to stay here when we trip up to Portland. It just a really fun place to spend a couple of days not going anywhere, but enjoying the space. It is very entertaining. Especially if you enjoy micro brewing. There are pubs scatter all over, from very small to large, each carrying a selection of brews on tap. They also, have special tappings, that are fun and tasty, and educational. They do a great job employing local artists making the common areas interesting and fun. Very fun decorations and design. For example there is Jerry's Ice House pub that is very small, intimate, and all about jerry Garcia. The spa hot soaking pool is very cool. And, a movie theater were you can have a beer a dinner, etc. a very fun place to explore and not go anywhere else.

Room Tip: Most rooms do not have own bathroom, but do have. Sink. The showers sand toilets are close by and r...

We live in Georgia and when we made plans to go to Seattle and visit family, spending a night here was a must on my to-do list! I had stayed in a Mcmenamins' hotel several years ago on a trip out west and adored every detail. My visit to this hotel exceeded my previous experience. A night of awesomeness! If you can't look beyond a few changes to normal hotel accommodations such as having a bathroom in your room, air conditioning, room TVs or phones, than I am sure you can find something more suitable for your needs. For me, the lack of those accommodations are not even important or noticeable with what is offered. When we arrived, we were greeted by several guests wearing white spa robes, drinks in hand, and headed no-doubt to the relaxing soaking pool. Every room is different and that is one of the things I love about this place. We stayed in a very reasonably priced, king size room with a small balcony. My brother and sister-in-law stayed in a room on the first floor that had an attached sitting room and huge windows. For a quick getaway where you can unwind and relax without having to drive to multiple locations, this is it. I wish we had stayed at least one more night. Next time.

We wished you lived closer too. Our rooms, as you experienced differ greatly, very few are the same. So glad you enjoy what we offer, we're definitely a unique hotel. Before we opened our Soaking Pool, guests roaming around in robes was somewhat uncommon, but now it's a very common site anywhere on property. It sure gives off a leisurely vibe!

We stayed years ago but just went back. This property is amazing. It's a giant mansion surrounded by beautiful green everywhere. There are two pitch and putts, 12 holes, and 20 holes. Unconventional, sure, fun, yeah! Glass blowing studio? Little red shed?

The make all their own beer, wine and spirits. Both nights we were there, music was to be had in the winery hallway. Amazing. If you need a break, just go and kick back, you don't even need to leave the property to have a calm, nice time. The pool is awesome too, you are surrounded by plants and we had it to ourselves!

(No TV in the room but you should enjoy the place and not watch TV anyway!)

Room Tip: I don't know for sure, but some rooms have sinks and/or bathrooms. Ours had none of the above...
