Seaside is a resort town through and through. It consists of a long, flat, deep beach with meek and mild waves off in the distance. It's like a giant sand box. There is a Promanade (concrete boardwalk) that lines 3 miles of this beach with about 15 hotels lined side by side along it. People bike, fly kites, play volley ball, build bonfires and, at low tides, go claming by the dozens. They also stroll the main streets of little tourist shops and eat salt water taffy. If you like vacationing with several hundred other tourists, this is the place for you.
If you have preschool children, this is a wonderful place as well. Your kids (or grandkids) can play in the sand for hours and you'll never have to worry about sneaker waves. They can safely play a long ways from the water, something rare on the Oregon coast. There are no rocks or drift wood to worry about. They even have swing sets right there on the beach. Hotels (and bath tubs) are just a short walk away. There is a funky little aquarium where they can feed seals, see an octopus and touch tide pool animals. It is far from world class, but just right for small children. Also, don't miss the hand carved carousel in the Carousel Mall.
You'll also enjoy Seaside if you are a history buff. The replica of Fort Clatsup, one of Lewis and Clark's winter forts, is just up the road, as well as several good museums in Astoria and across the river in Washington. WW II Fort Stevens is close by and fun to visit as well.
If however, you are looking for the "Oregon Coast experience" with majestic, rugged coast, crashing waves and breath taking views, head south: perhaps Lincoln City, Newport, or my favorite, Yachats. Another reason to head south are the prices. We paid $150.00/ night for a 2 star hotel. In Lincon City, that same week, we could have stayed in a nicer hotel for $79.00. Seaside and Cannon Beach are the closest beaches to Portland, hence the high prices and crowds. If you are a Portlander, it is however, a cheaper choice than Cannon Beach, only 5 miles away.
We enjoyed our stay in Seaside, but I can't say we'd come again. If we want to see more of that area, we would stay in cheaper Astoria or camp across the river at Cape Disappointment.
We enjoyed our hotel, the Ebb Tide and our favorite Seaside restaurant is Dundees (found through a tip from a local). The best candy was chocolate covered pecan brittle from Tom and Larry's (the place doesn't look like much, but they know their candy!).
Tip: don't get a room on the ground floor of any hotel that lines the Promande - you'll have no privacy. People will stroll along 5 feet from your window. Several of the larger hotels have their swiming pools and exercise rooms front and center too. Only the buff and the brave dare enter and strangers will be watching your children.
