“Great food, wine, in a casual setting”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 10, 2011 via mobile

This place is pretty unassuming frrom the outside but once inside it has a nice casual french bistro feel. I was initially surprised to see so many great French wines on the wine list since most places in and around salem (even the french ones) focus on oregon wines. The appeal of the wine list to me is that it went beyond your typical first growth bordeaux and burgundian wines and included some selections from other regions which tend to be great values. I should mention though that they did have an excellent selection of Oregon wines as well.

The food was also excellent, the menu shifts a bit daily so I will definately be coming back next time im in town.

“Classy surprise in Salem”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 1, 2011

My wife and I are on vacation in the NorthWest from Houston trying to escape the heat. Generally found the scenery beautiful in both, Washington and Oregon and the food - although fresh - not really special. Then we looked on Tripadvisor and found "The Crooked House Bistro" in Salem. Probably never would have found it without GPS and Tripadvisor. But we were suffuciently impressed to be taking the time to do this review and enable others to find this gem of a restaurant. Actually met the chef Bernard - from Brittany, who comes to greet the guests - at the end of the eveining. This is probably not the cheapest place, but certainly not obnoxiously expensive as some places we patronised once - and never again. Entries are in the $20 to $30 range - and worth every cent! This place is for those seeking the pleasure with every byte and quality of locally grown fresh ingredients - over the quantity of food to fill themselves with. Hence the portions that are properly French - enough for a nice dinner but not extensively big to feed two people. Chef Bernard uses really fresh ingredients and prepares them- exquisitely. I had a flat iron steak and it was about the size of a small filet - but superbly done from an organic beef - I thik the chef knew the cow! My wife had scallops which were perfectly prepared and matched with crisp fois gras. It is a combination I would not have thought of but it worked . We opted for a cheese plate instead of desert and it was a lovely selection -heavy on local Oregon goat and other kind of cheses. All in all - I wish we could move this one back home to Texas. It was a lovely surprise. Especially after we asked for suggestions at the hotel and were told there was a Denny's across the street. There was a guitar player at the bistro adding a little extra ambience to the excellent food - a far cry from what was available at Denny's.

“Intimate setting, delicious food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 24, 2011 via mobile

Dined here with my wife and two other couples last night. This is a small bistro so make a reservation! We loved the eggplant starter. The goat cheese salad and tomato salads were delicious. Entrees were bison, snapper, lamb and wonderful. Menu changes daily. Dessert was the flour less chocolate cake. Yum.

It is more expensive than other French restaurants we've been to in larger cities, but we enjoyed the meal. Great place to celebrate a special occasion.

Intimate setting, great food, great wine and knowledgeable staff make this my favorite restaurant in Salem. It's not cheap, but well worth it for a special night out.

“Great food in an intimate setting”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 14, 2011

A wonderful restaurant. Extensive European wine list, with a few local wines. The menu changes daily, based on the available ingredients. The food is excellent, and presentation is simple. Staff is good, and service attentive, but not hovering around you.
Reservation necessary, as the place is very small.
We love the place!
