“Oldie but comfortable stop in Oregon”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 3, 2013

We were on a road trip from San Francisco to Seattle along the coast. Driving back we decided to take the inland route thru Washington/Oregon. Very picturesque area of forests and mountains. We picked this hotel because of good reviews. It is a rather old motel type, but clean and kept up, decent beds, mainly traveling retirees. We had asked for a courtyard room but was sent to a semi-basement room. We were not happy with that one and asked to be moved to a courtyard room. They had one available and it made all the difference with glass sliding doors and lots of light. Like the picture they show.We were comfortable. Breakfast was in another building and was typical. Glad it wasn't raining. We drove a couple of blocks to the local Applebees' for dinner. It was a decent place to stop, but nothing to write home about.

Room Tip: Be sure to ask for a room around the courtyard or you will get a gloomy room with high windows. The...

My husband and I have family in Roseburg, visiting several times a year, and wanted to give Windmill Inn a try after unsatisfactory stays elsewhere. First, we were not told that they would be having major renovation with the landscape in the courtyard and all around the Inn, which was not really a problem for us as we were gone everyday (for 5 days) visiting family. However, it WOULD HAVE BEEN A PROBLEM because of noise and lack of use of courtyard if we had wanted to be in our room or on premises during the day. Not being told felt like we were being tricked into staying, no matter what price we paid. BUT THE WORST ISSUE was that we had a room with 2 queen beds and the first night we had wanted to sleep in the bed away from the window, however when turning down the bed we discovered a spot about the size of a quarter in an area that could have been bodily fluids. We did not know if the sheets were clean, so we slept in the other bed. We reported the problem to the front desk 3 different times in a two day period AND THE SHEETS WERE NEVER CHANGED! Worst response we have had anywhere we have stayed ever! The other issue, was the bathroom had the usual sign telling you that if you do not need your towels laundered to leave them on the rack (save water). In a 5 day stay, no matter what we did, ALL the towels were changed each and every day! We live in an area with a severe draught problem and did not appreciate that housekeeping did not adhere to request. There also was an odor in room every time we entered, which we assumed was age and moisture.

I sincerely apologize for the issues you encountered during your stay. It certainly doesn't live up to the standards we set here at the hotel nor does it represent the experience our guests have come to expect from us.

As far as the painting, landscaping, and repair we are doing to improve the exterior, we have set aside the month of October to complete these items as that was the latest in the year we were able to do exterior work. We do our best to make sure we don't rent out any rooms that are directly affected by the work, though as you noted, the courtyard area was closed during your stay. This is a safety measure that we did our best to inform guests of when they booked their reservation as well as during check-in. Unfortunately we are limited to how quickly we can change information on all of the travel booking sites, so we only sold limited room types (those that would be least affected by the work being done) on those sites. I apologize that we were unable to make you aware of this ahead of time, but please know that by no means was our intent to deceive.

As to the more concerning issue of your request for sheets being changed not being met, I can't apologize enough. We have systems in place to ensure that any guest request that comes in is handled immediately, and that system failed due to a necessary communication not happening during the process. I have gone over this with the staff at the hotel today and will have gone over it with the rest by the end of the week, stressing why it is so important. The initial problem should never have happened, but having to ask more than once for the same issue to be resolved can never happen. There are some things like outside noise or a noisy ice machine that are challenging for us to handle immediately, but something like what you mentioned is completely within our control. Again, I apologize for that experience.

If you can, I'd like to speak with you personally about this incident. I can be reached at the hotel directly at 541-673-0901. Unfortunately the website doesn't provide enough information for me to be able to find your reservation in our system to contact you myself.

Thank you,

Allen Pike

Pro: Clean, good breakfast (although you have to go outside the hotel to get to the breakfast room), easy highway access, Fred Meyer store a few blocks away, fridge, microwave. Easy parking near rooms makes for ease of getting luggage into the room.

Con: Low flush toilet needed 2 - 4 flushes. I don't see the advantage of these low flush toilets if one has to repeatedly flush.

However, I still believe this is the go-to place to stay in Roseburg. It was the cheapest hotel on our trip. I will be back.

This is an extremely affordable place to stay. Very tidy and clean and close to the freeway for easy access. I enjoyed my stay and would highly recommend those who are traveling to CA as a great place to spend the night.

Room Tip: You might want to choose a room away from the freeway though it was very quiet during the night.

Thank you for your review! I'm very happy to hear that you enjoyed your stay. The freeway rooms are truly in the ear of the beholder, most people find them quiet but some hear noise from the freeway. We have some repeat guests that request those rooms and others that want to be as far from the freeway as possible. Please let us know when you come up again and we'll do our best to find a room that works for you.

Thank you for staying with us,

We were looking for a convenient stop on the way from Northern California to Portland and Roseburg fit the bill; we selected the Windmill in part because of previous good Trip Advisor recommendations and its location near I-5. We found the Inn excellent -- the checkin was friendly and helpful; we were advised that we should take a quieter second floor room, but then found that there was at least one room on the ground floor that did not have a room above, and it was very quiet. The accommodations are comfortable, with free wi-fi in the rooms, all facilities very clean and even nice amenities. All for a price, albeit in a quiet season, that was more than reasonable. We were steps from the jacuzzi and the breakfast room (good breakfast included too) without going outside, and just around the outdoor pool (closed for the season) to the laundry. Strongly recommend this hotel for anyone stopping in Roseburg for the day or several days, as it is within easy reach of some of Oregon's great tourist locations.

Room Tip: Rooms on the top floor are quieter, but there are one or two that do not have rooms above, so you c...

Hotel was VERY clean, one of the most comfortable hotel beds I've ever slept in, super friendly staff, good breakfast with healthy options and great tv...perfect for what we needed for the night. We stayed on the first floor and unfortunately whoever was above us was up at 6:00am making a lot of noise...obviously not the hotel's fault but definitely ask for the 2nd floor or a room away from others if the hotel isnt full. Would stay here again in a heartbeat!
