Introduced to the world at large – or at least the movie-watching world – in The Postman with Kevin Costner, this tuff and basalt rock formation along the Crooked River is a must when you’re in the area. It was also provided movie-quality scenery for quite a few old westerns, among them Rooster Cogburn. Even though considered the American birthplace of sports climbing with its sheer cliffs, the place is not only a magnet for climbers. It offers several loop hiking trials, ranging from very easy along the river to really strenuous as you climb to the very top and pass behind Monkey Face and see the climbers preparing for their ascent close up. From up there you can also see as far as the snowcapped peaks of the Cascades to the west. The trail along the river is extremely scenic and green and you may get to see various birds and water fowl. We picked the hard Misery Ridge Trail, but it was well worth it. Wear good shoes if you pick that one, and carry some water with you. Make sure you bring your camera, too!
