Despite the recent negative reviews here, my boyfriend and I decided to give the Westin another try, as we had a great stay here in Jan 2004.

We found the staff to be really helpful and courteous. We parked in the Alder St. Parking Garage and it was only $6.00 for 24 hrs! (Sat-Sun)
Thank goodness I read about that on this site!

We called the Westin to make a reservation and got the same price as quoted on all the discount sites.

The room was small, but fine for 2. We really came here again for the Heavenly Bed and Bath. The shower was great. The bed was comfortable but a sheet was torn and tattered.

Highly recommend checking out Nob Hill for fun shopping and good restaurants... we liked Sammy's for brunch.

I think we got what we paid for at the Westin.

We're pretty easy to please and were looking fwd to a great Portland getaway and concerts. I'd thought that some of these negative reviews were unwarranted but after our last stay 4/28-5/01/05, I hate to say I agree. We've stayed at this Hotel frequently since 1/00 and (prior to this visit!) had sung its praises. NO MORE! Something has happened to the Portland Westin and it isn't pretty, courteous, honest, or clean!

Our 3 day stay (booked through the Portland Vistor site-POVA) was one "mis-understanding" after another. For one thing, the "Heavenly" label is now being attached to any old room, bed and bath. Previously, a standard of comfort, service and cleanliness was strictly upheld...NO MORE. The sheets were worn and rough, the room smelled stale, the carpets and duvet were dirty, the sink leaked all over our toiletries, and the phones did not work.

We were not greeted by anyone upon entering the Hotel during this stay-even if so-called "door staff" was outside or near the door...well they were always talking amongst themselves. No one offered help with luggage, or doors and we had to force the car keys on them, only getting their attention because it was a shiny red sports car I think. Most of the time, the doormen could be found leaning on the front desk ...talking. Every time we neared the desk we could hear 1) the sounds of employee chitchat ignoring customers and/or 2) the sounds of yet another round of guests complaining.

Our "Heavenly Suite King" was very small with small walkway around the bed, noisy, and for a non-smoking room, it sure filled up with cigarette smoke ALOT...from where, we're not sure except that at night the halls were filled with smoke and when we dared to complain...well no one wanted to hear about it. You could actually see the smoke curling around the door into our room. The "Heavenly" robes came in handy to block the smoke from under the door but the large crack in the side of the door proved more difficult to master. The desk also did not want to hear about any room problems. The phones did not work-even to call the desk, the housekeeper did not make the room up -we returned to our room at 5:30 pm to get ready for dinner and a concert only to find no clean towels and our room as we'd left it that morning. When we contacted the desk (phones don't work so had to trek down to the desk) we were told we were "lucky" that anyone was still there and if we'd stay away for "awhile longer" the room would be "cleaned". We missed our dinner plans as we could not get in the room to shower and get dressed in time.

"Cleaned"...is that what they called it? It took a long time but the trash was still full, no TP, missing towels, bed made sloppily (turns out we NEVER had our sheets changed at $200 plus a night-because there is a small green sign you need to put on your dirty bed to get clean sheets, the sign wasn't in our room at all and we didn't know this odd fact til checkout -tho we asked for clean sheets!).

After the housekeeper left, we were missing a Westin meal voucher and could not find it anywhere so weren't sure if it was in the garbage that finally got emptied, or what. It was for $30 and the desk refused to reissue it, saying "anyone" could use it... good grief, it had our room and date on it.

In fairness (and great contrast), the Daily Grill restuarant (attached to Hotel) was pleasant and the staff was cheerful and quite helpful.

Portland Westin...NO MORE (of our money)

This is the worst hotel i have ever stayed in. The room we had was so small that two people could not pass each other, and their staff was rude and unprofesional, don't waste your money

The place was great for being a Westin. But the walls were a little too thin such that you could hear your neighbors. Above average.

This is my fifth visit to Portland in five years and with each visit I have stayed at a different hotel. I decided to stay at the Westin because of a marvellous stay I had at The Ottawa Westin.

Positive Points: Very central to everything in downtown Portland. Most staff were very gracious and accommodating. The bed was comfortable. Two out of the three nights were quiet. There was a large bathroom with separate tub.

Negative Points: After staying at a Westin Hotel I had expectations about the caliber of service and the room. Sometimes I found myself just shaking my head thinking..."Is this hotel really part of the Westin chain?". For example, when we arrived at the hotel we had to "shleck" our luggage from the taxi to the front desk because there were no doormen to be found. No big deal.

On one day we did not receive a morning paper. When I inquired as to why we didn't receive a paper the front desk person stated that the local Sunday paper was to large to distribute to everyone.

When we checked in at the small front desk there were two people ahead of us and one front desk person to provide service. After about 15 minutes of still waiting to check in I thought, "Hmmm, at The Heathman we would have been checked in already and planning our first excursion." The room was small and our bed faced the door to the hallway

The bathroom wall around the toilet was not clean so I put in a request for it to be cleaned. This was done the next day. The terry cloth robe provided had a large frayed hole in the shoulder. I asked to have this replaced. This was also done. Also one of the towels provided had large holes. The tiles in the bathroom had a considerable amount of mildew.

So when I return to Portland here's the order I would choose a hotel.

The Heathman (small rooms-amazing service)
Hotel Vintage Plaza (good sized rooms, good service)
The Westin (comfortable bed)
The Benson (beautiful lobby, old "run down" rooms)

Hope this helps.

Kate
