We stayed at the Rodeway Inn the first week of June. We did end up staying in the older Rodeway Inn section which is the rear building.
Some thoughts:
Yes it is an older property which has been remodeled to a degree even in the older section. This did not prove to be a problem as the room was clean, the AC and shower worked fine, the TV was great.
Yes, it is owned by the Four Square Churches and even has a house of worship in the complex. Part of the mission of the Church is to rehabilitate "lost souls" who are turning their lives around. An article in the Portland newspaper indicated a few years ago this property was the scene of illegal activity (before the Church bought and renovated the area.) I had a chance to talk to some of the employees and they were very honest and did good work. (Mostly outside maintenance) I had no problems and felt very safe and comfortable at this property. And while it is a Church owned property, the extent of the "preaching" is Church music where they serve breakfast. Not a problem at all.
The area has changed and we felt safe walking in the immediate area. We had no problems.
As has been mentioned they serve a fine breakfast from about 7 to 9am- fresh fruits, cereal, biscuits, waffles, coffee, juices, etc. and it's a self-serve all you can eat.
Location- it is really close to the lightrail system that runs from the airport to Portland. It's right behind the hotel and is very easy to use. Portland really does have a good transportation system and this hotel is ideally located. Getting to the city area was a snap.
Bottom Line- It's really a nice (but plain) property with good front office personnel. A shuttle to the airport is free and open 24 hours. And all for about $60 a night (double)! I'm sure the rate changes depending upon the time of year you visit but I'm sure it will always be a cost below the competition.
Will definitely use this property again when in the area.
