We stayed at the Rodeway Inn the first week of June. We did end up staying in the older Rodeway Inn section which is the rear building.
Some thoughts:
Yes it is an older property which has been remodeled to a degree even in the older section. This did not prove to be a problem as the room was clean, the AC and shower worked fine, the TV was great.

Yes, it is owned by the Four Square Churches and even has a house of worship in the complex. Part of the mission of the Church is to rehabilitate "lost souls" who are turning their lives around. An article in the Portland newspaper indicated a few years ago this property was the scene of illegal activity (before the Church bought and renovated the area.) I had a chance to talk to some of the employees and they were very honest and did good work. (Mostly outside maintenance) I had no problems and felt very safe and comfortable at this property. And while it is a Church owned property, the extent of the "preaching" is Church music where they serve breakfast. Not a problem at all.
The area has changed and we felt safe walking in the immediate area. We had no problems.

As has been mentioned they serve a fine breakfast from about 7 to 9am- fresh fruits, cereal, biscuits, waffles, coffee, juices, etc. and it's a self-serve all you can eat.

Location- it is really close to the lightrail system that runs from the airport to Portland. It's right behind the hotel and is very easy to use. Portland really does have a good transportation system and this hotel is ideally located. Getting to the city area was a snap.

Bottom Line- It's really a nice (but plain) property with good front office personnel. A shuttle to the airport is free and open 24 hours. And all for about $60 a night (double)! I'm sure the rate changes depending upon the time of year you visit but I'm sure it will always be a cost below the competition.
Will definitely use this property again when in the area.

The Rodeway Inn is conveniently located adjoining the Park & Ride at Parkrose/Sumner. It was nice being able to leave the car at the hotel and just hop a MAX train into downtown. And it's just a couple of stops away from the airport, for those flying into town.

The staff at the check-in desk and the Sacred Grounds coffee shop (where the free breakfast is served) couldn't have been nicer. My wife raved about friendliness of the coffee-shop staff. Because of our schedule, we didn't take advantage of the free breakfast, so I can't comment on that.

The room, while basic, was clean and comfortable. The TV was a little small, and the reception on some channels wasn't the greatest (especially when the air conditioner was on), but there was a good selection of channels.

Oh, the water pressure! The water coming out of the shower was so forceful, you could just about peel paint with it. You need to be careful to aim the shower head carefully and have the curtain drawn properly before turning on the shower, or you could splash a lot of water all over the floor (which we did). If you like high-powered showers, this is the place for you!

While there were signs advertising the Christian church that owns the hotel, there was nothing else to make any non-Christians uncomfortable. As I said before, everybody was nice and friendly, and seemed sincerely interested in making sure you enjoyed your stay. We did!

I would've given this a rating of 3, except the exceptional behavior of the staff pushed it to a 4. You'll never mistake it for an expensive hotel with a lot of high-end amenities, but it's a perfectly fine hotel that we'd be happy to stay at again.

Pulled into the complex and thought "Oh no".. we were going to cancel and go to a better looking hotel. Looks are not what they seem. The room was nice with mini-fridge and a microwave. Everything was clean and in order. Overall, a nice surprise.
One thing that we didn't care for, though it was never pushed on us, was the religious overtones of the property. There is a church on site, and the coffee shop plays god music. If you are totally against religion- don't stay here.
That aside, the staff were super nice and printed directions for us. Always answered questions, and were extremely polite.
Our room key never worked from one day to the next, so we'd have to get re-keyed when we got back to the hotel. A minor nuisance.
Parking lot is kind of small, but still allows ample parking with not a lot of hassle to get in/out. Location was great- just off the interstate making for quick, easy access to wherever you want to go.

I would highly recommend the Rodeway Inn for a stay in the Portland area. The property was purchased by a Christian Church two years ago. The rooms have been beautifully renovated with amenities including, marble bathroom, refridgerators, microwaves, new A/C units and incredibly comfortable beds. Other in-room amenities include coffee maker, hair dryer, iron and board. We were so pleasantly surprised by how nice the rooms are. It looks like a travel motel on the outside, but the rooms are very nice.

The staff working at the hotel and adjacent restaurant/coffee bar couldn't be nicer. Each night's stay includes a continental breakfast which is extraordinary. The breakfast includes make-it-yourself waffles, cereals, oatmeal, biscuits & gravy, yogurt, fresh fruit and an assortment of baked goodies. It also includes coffee, tea, orange juice or milk.

We booked our room through the hotel website. We needed 2 double beds for a family of four. This cost us $58. A king room was less expensive. I think the breakfast for the four of us would have probably cost half the price of the room if it weren't included.

One other thing you should know.... the hotel is right on the Max (liight rail) red line. The train stop is Park Rose (it's about 2 - 3 stops from the airport). It's about a 15 - 20 easy commute to downtown Portland. The train stops right at the edge of the hotel property (in the parking lot). This makes travel to the downtown area VERY convenient. The hotel also offers a free shuttle to and from the airport.

Lastly, I wanted to mention that the Rodeway Inn and the Quality Inn are actually the same hotel. The Rodeway Inn is actually the older section that has not been renovated (I don't think) yet. Upon availability all guests are placed in the newly renovated Quality Inn rooms.

My husband goes to Portland quite a bit on business and he has decided to frequent this motel in the future because for the price it is a bargain and it is actually nicer than many of the higher priced hotels in downtown Portland where he usually stays.

  • Liked — Free Wi-Fi and breakfast. Soft comfortable beds. Clean, newly renovated room.
  • Disliked — The travel motel look of the exterior.

We chose this hotel over all others because of the price and because of the great reviews given on this website. Everything went well until my husband was going to sleep, when he removed the sheets to get into bed, we found out that someone had "pee'd" in the bed, and it had gone straight throught the bedspread, and sheets. There was also mold on the shower wall. Even though they were planning to renovate the rooms, that part should always be clean. When they were notified of this situation, they were quick to want to move us to a ground floor room even though I had asked them earlier upon check in because we had so much luggage. I thought they would be a little more accommodating.Althought the hotel would not refund us the night, the night manager brought over new linen which we set up ourselves. I would probably not stay there again. Another thing, we asked them for maps of the area, and they had none. What hotel does not have maps of the area?
