“More hipsters than you can shake a stick at!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 5, 2006

This is not your average hotel. I mean that in every imaginable way too. From it's re-furbished Holiday Inn asthetics to it's non-stop action saloon, a stay at The Jupiter is unlike anything you've ever experienced.

Don't stay here if you want a quiet place to recharge your batteries, 'cause that simply won't happen. Do stay here if you are up for a good time with a bunch of cool people who also happen to love loud music and body art.

Put it this way, there's no mini-bar, no room service, and the rooms are furnished by Ikea. But, instead of all that you get iPod speakers, great food and drinks at The Doug Fir (the attached hipster bistro) an in-room condom (daily), and access to some of the coolest up and coming bands around on a nightly basis.

You've got to see it to believe it. And it's certainly not for everyone.

  • Liked — The laid back attitude that surrounded the place
  • Disliked — The low-grade room interiors
  • Tips/Secrets — If you don't know what SXSW is, don't stay here.

Got reservations through Orbitz - had requested a three star property. The night before we left we read some of the other reviews so we were somewhat on notice on what to expect. Within the motel are a restaurant and bar where bands play every night. We asked for a room as far away from the bar as possible so we didn't hear the band noise. The bar doesn't close until 4 a.m. so we did hear other people coming and going and yelling to each other. The room was very spartan with a few Ikea like pieces and a very low platform bed - a light for reading on only one side of the bed. In the bathroom was a stainless bar sink set in a tiny vanity. The doors are painted with blackboard paint and there is a plastic cup in your room with a few pieces of chalk if you want to decorate your door or leave messages. They have made an attempt to market this place to a young hip crowd.
I do want to say that all the staff we dealt with were friendly, polite, and accommodating. The restaurant/bar are owned by different people than own the motel. We ate at the restaurant, Doug Fir, twice - once for dinner and once for breakfast - and it was very good.

The motel is in a good location if you are a walker. You can walk over the Burnside bridge which puts you downtown.

So, while it had some positives, we are a couple in our early 60s with an affinity for creature comforts and definitely unhip so we won't stay here again. It is not a three star property!

Don't go here, if you want a good night's rest. However, if sightings of cool bands, people in circus like attire (including stilts), and mexican wrestlers make you happy; then this hotel is for you. We, a late 30's married couple, had a blast! The food in the restaurant is yummy and the drinks at The Doug Fir are strong.
