“Nice Friday Night”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 29, 2014

Hotel has underwent some renovations I do have to say I've never seen a stove that old! It was like eclectic charm rapped up in a newer room. Price was right stay was clean, room was quite what else could you ask for!

Thank you so much for spending your Friday night with us! From what you've described, you were not in one of our renovated rooms, but I'm happy you enjoyed your guestroom. I hope if you return to Portland, you'll allow us to be your hosts once again.
All the best,

Pam

we were booked at a Best Western on the north end of the city near the racetrack (the answer to your question is "I do not know why..."), and after battling the sold out crowds for the poodle show and taking the 40 minute train ride to downtown, we were walking by the Mark Spencer and thought, let's just see if they have a room available. they did, the guy at the counter was really nice and said he could help us out on the $219/nt room rate, and asked us how much we wanted to pay. We gave him our rate at the BW and he matched it, and that was for a walk-in on a Friday and Saturday night. we were stoked, and happy we bought day passes on the train and went and got our stuff and came back downtown. We must have got one of the renovated rooms (3rd floor, right next to the elevator, but we did not even hear it), because ours was really nice, clean, the bathroom was sparkling and the rest of the room was really comfortable. the linens on the bed were SO SOFT. the AC was in the ceiling unit and kept the room perfect. there were 3 windows on one side, one in the main bed/sitting room, there was a little hall/closet room with a window, and the bathroom had one, all opened, and all had unobstructed views of the sky, which was nice. we didn't drive a car so don't know about the parking, but the 5 pm wine & snacks time was nice, and our son & gf joined us for a glass. the breakfast looked ok, but we went out because that's what we did the whole time in Portland - eat, drink, eat, drink, sleep, walk, etc. Stumptown Roasters was close, easy, and so many restaurants to choose from all over. the Max train stops were several blocks away but that wasn't a bad thing.

Room Tip: unobstructed windows were nice - good light

So glad you found us! We're always happy to accommodate travelers! You were, indeed, in one of our newly renovated rooms which offers additional soundproofing, beautiful glass and marble bathrooms, luxurious linens and windows that open! Our wine tasting in the evening is quite popular, serving local Oregon wines. A nice treat before dinner! With award winning restaurants to choose from, I hope you found your favorite. If you get a chance to return to Portland, we would love to be your hosts once again. Thank you for staying with us - it was truly our pleasure!
All the best,
Pam

We stayed in town 2 nights in early July, and thought the location was great for first-time visitors. 2 or 3 blocks from Powell's Books, the food carts on Alder, and Blue Star donuts. Stumptoen Roasters coffee was half a block away. It was like 10 blocks from Voodoo donuts. The staff was very helpful, service was good. Parking available in the underground garage. Our room was a little funky, seemed like the couch was from the 1960's, but the room was clean and we had nice views looking out over downtown. Maybe they were just keeping Portland weird.

What a fun review! We could agree with you in saying we're trying to "keep Portland weird", but the truth is, the room you were in has not been renovated yet. I am happy you found all the wonderful places mentioned in your review - Stumptown Coffee (a local Portland roaster), the food carts, Powell's books and Blue Star Donuts vs Voodoo Donuts - which was your favorite? I hope you will return to see all the improvements taking place at the hotel and the lovely , new guestrooms. It was our pleasure to have you as our guest!
Have a wonderful summer!

Seriously comfortable beds, if you like them soft (as I do!). Other than that, it's a basic hotel. No bell boys, limited services (no on-site room service so the hours are limited) but great girls on the front desk. They couldn't do enough to help you.

My room was on the fourth floor and it was seriously old. It reminded me of my grandmothers' house (with furniture almost that old) and had a really stale smell - almost musty. It also faced internally effectively, meaning another room was directly opposite, maybe only 15ft away.. Not ideal and at the weekend it was pretty noisy. During the refurb they should also improve the sound-proofing - I was woken up three nights in a row by the crying baby in the next door room.

On site laundry, free wifi, huge TV in the bedroom and a decent continental breakfast were useful. Other than that, it's location in the Pearl district (or edge of) was great as PDX is a really walking friendly city.

Next year, I'll probably choose somewhere else on balance... Maybe this is indicative of the value I felt I'd received at the rate I'd paid.

I would like to thank you for your review - so happy you loved the beds! I would like to apologize if our bellman missed you at check-in. He may have been with another guest and not out front when you arrived. I appreciate hearing your comments as this helps us to improve our service to you. During our renovation, we are providing additional sound proofing in the walls of each guestroom. This should significantly reduce the noise coming from other guestrooms and corridors. I would like to invite you back to experience these improvements and to get your feedback on the changes to our rooms. Thank you for staying with us.
Have a wonderful summer!
Warm Regards,
Pam

I stayed in a renovated room on the 6th floor. The bed was great, huge flat screen, shower and bathroom was all new and spacious. The room was above average size, estimate it to be 700 sq/ft. Staff was great, breakfast was 7/10 as it was basic. Self serve coffee machine was the real deal. Parking lot parking for $20 just across the street. Easy walk to food carts, Henrys Tavern, court house square pretty much anywhere down town. Fitness room was small, but everything was brand new industrial grade. Brand new A/C in my room.

It sounds as if you found a few of Portland's unique places, which are some of our favorites, as well! The food carts are only 2 blocks from the hotel - choosing what to eat is the difficult part! Henry's 12th Street Tavern is also within 2 blocks of the hotel - a lovely restaurant in the old Henry Weinhard Brewery. Thank you for sharing your Portland experience with us and I hope you will visit again soon.
All the best,
Pam

The hotel is located close to bars, restaurants, things to do, shopping and transit. Loved the location. That being said, the hotel itself was not great. The rooms were spacious and comfortable, but kind of dated. It's seems they took an old apartment building and they did not do a whole lot of updating when they turned it into a boutique hotel.

Room Tip: Ask if they have any rooms without a kitchen in the middle of the room and without the need to walk...

I hope you enjoyed your visit to Portland. I would like to personally thank you for choosing to stay with us. We truly have the best location in town and I'm sure you found many favorite places to eat and shop! While the size of our rooms won't change during renovation (still spacious), the new look becomes a beautiful blend of modern and traditional. I hope if you visit our city again, you will let us show you the new designs. It was our pleasure to have you as our guest!
All the best,
Pam

What a neat hotel and yet one with several contradictions. We had an updated room & it us so cool with original brick of this 100 year old hotel but with modern look & amenities. Our room had a small kitchen with everything but the coffee for next morning! Had to go down to the lobby. Bathroom was tiny (only one at a time & no room for your toiletries). Gorgeous bedding and comfy beds. Location is close to everything downtown.

I loved your description of the hotel! We are a "gem that is getting polished each day" with rooms being renovated, beautifully remodeled corridors and new designs for our lobby and public areas. We are exposing and preserving much of the original brickwork and wooden beams in the guestrooms. This is truly a labor of love and the finished product is a beautiful part of history. I hope you will return to see more of this lovely, 100+ year old building. Thank you for being our guest. Have a wonderful summer!
Warm Regards,
Pam
