“A trip back in time”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 20, 2012

I spent my last night in Portland (at the end of a brutal 5-day conference) at the Heathman, in order to escape the hotel I had been housed in for the conference. I cannot imagine a better choice.
The staff were immediately attentive and friendly, very down-to-earth, and very professional without the usual corporate stuffiness of downtown hotels. Almost as if they enjoyed their jobs. The feel of the whole place is intimate and quiet, kind of like I imagine an old gentlemen's club to have been.
My room was clean, quiet, and well laid out. Chock full of furniture, but not crowded feeling. More funky and eclectic than you are used to, if you travel a lot. The deep bathtub was the most welcome sight I had seen all week. Deep bed and deep sleep, too. Perfect.
If you are fond of staying in boutique hotels, but get a little tired of the euro-modern minimalism of so many of them, then be sure to visit the Heathman the next time you are in Portland. You will not regret it.

Room Tip: Top floor suite. Say no more.

“Nothing "weird" about the Heathman!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 20, 2012

Portland embraces its "weirdness", but the Heathman Hotel is nothing short of boutique "cool".

This was my second stay at the Heathman in the past 2 months (September 2012 and November 2012) and I love the property. Not too big, not too small. Not to stuffy, not too outrageous. Attentive, but not overbearing. It's perfect for business or leisure in the heart of downtown Portland.

After my second stay I realized what made this hotel so comfortable - other than the obvious of bed, pillow, amenities, etc (which were all very nice) - it's the colors and the lighting. The common areas and rooms have the perfect combination of decor, color and lighting. Hard to describe unless you see it yourself.

Yes ... rooms are smaller, but well appointed. Although I had the fortune of staying in #902 on my last visit and it was very spacious. Additionally, the "little things" make a big difference to me. Wireless internet is free and fast, French press and fresh coffee in all the rooms, convenient outlets, noise masking HVAC system, a bottle of water, small but efficient exercise room, live jazz every night in the lounge.

I would highly recommend checking it out if you visit PDX. Don't miss the Warhol art collection and library while you're there. Very unique!

“A wonderful stay at the Heathman”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 20, 2012

We stayed here for 2 nights and loved it. The location is fantastic; easy walking distance to restaurants, shops, etc. (we even walked to the Rose Garden and back but we were feeling ambitious). The staff was very helpful, friendly and welcoming. We had a deluxe king room and I thought it was very tastefully decorated and spacious enough for 2 people. The bathroom was definitely small but that's to be expected in an older, charming building. The vanity area was large enough to compensate for the lack of space in the actual bathroom. The bed was incredibly comfortable, the linens were great, and we really would've liked to lounge around in it all day. Also, the toiletries were nice. We didn't take advantage of the restaurant or wine tasting but they looked great too; maybe next time.

“Not ready for prime time”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed November 18, 2012

There were three issues with the hotel room which were problematic and, in my opinion, are basic and should have been addressed before allowing guests to use the room. 1) The vent in the bathroom is inoperable. The room is tiny. The bathroom is tiny too and has no windows. Therefore, ventilation is vital. 2) The lack of ventilation in the bathroom leads to the next issue--dank, musty, bad smell in the bathroom. I asked for the shower curtain to be changed before I left for the morning. When I returned in the evening the shower curtain had been changed, but the new one was still wet and still smelled. I asked for a dry shower curtain, but the new one also smelled musty/mildewy. 3) The curtain rod for one of the windows in the room was broken. The staff person tried to fix it (all the while in our room--awkward), but couldn't fix it. He finally said he had to return the next day to change the curtain rod. All of these issues should have been addressed before anyone was rented the room.

Dear G M,
I apologize for the experience you had in your room. We have a very strict inspection program here at the hotel and every room is thoroughly inspected prior to every guests arrival. It is disappointing to hear that these issues were not corrected or caught in the inspection process. I will look into how this happened.
I did want to mention also that we have many room types available of all shapes and sizes. I am not sure what room you stayed in this time but I am positive we can find a room that will be more comfortable for you if you choose to stay again.
Please feel free to contact me directly to discuss your most recent stay in more detail.
Thank you for taking the time to share your comments.

“Middle Level Conference”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 12, 2012

A small group of Middle Level educators that attended a great conference, and stayed in a fabulous hotel. Location was easy to walk to the local transportation, great recommendations on places to dine, and friendly staff.

Room Tip: Ask for the street side room, great leaves to look at out the windows.
