I spent my last night in Portland (at the end of a brutal 5-day conference) at the Heathman, in order to escape the hotel I had been housed in for the conference. I cannot imagine a better choice.
The staff were immediately attentive and friendly, very down-to-earth, and very professional without the usual corporate stuffiness of downtown hotels. Almost as if they enjoyed their jobs. The feel of the whole place is intimate and quiet, kind of like I imagine an old gentlemen's club to have been.
My room was clean, quiet, and well laid out. Chock full of furniture, but not crowded feeling. More funky and eclectic than you are used to, if you travel a lot. The deep bathtub was the most welcome sight I had seen all week. Deep bed and deep sleep, too. Perfect.
If you are fond of staying in boutique hotels, but get a little tired of the euro-modern minimalism of so many of them, then be sure to visit the Heathman the next time you are in Portland. You will not regret it.
