“Dance the night away...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 9, 2013

Jimmy Mak's is a jazz bar with panache! The atmosphere is very cool with special lighting and a dance floor large enough for the size of the venue. Cover charge is reasonable as are the drink prices. There is a room off to the side with intimate seating and offering space for quiet conversation. The crowd is a bit more sophisticated than most jazz clubs but everyone was there to have a good time. Can't wait to return!

“Good place; will go back”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 24, 2013

My husband and I made dinner reservations because that seems to be the only way you can get guaranteed seating to listen to jazz. Consequently, we didn't expect much from the food and were pleasantly surprised. Husband's steak was cooked to order and my Cobb salad with grilled chicken skewer was as good as any I had eaten elsewhere. Solid wine list. Where this place really shines is its service. I was quite impressed with our server, Lucas, who was both friendly and efficient. Music was good, though I would not go anywhere else to hear Chris Brown play again. Ultimately, this is a good place to eat decent food and listen to decent music. Doorman was nice, too.

“Nice place”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 11, 2013

This was a cool spot. I wouldn't call what I heard "great jazz," but it was good. The place is large and has a lot of seating (but make sure you call well in advance for reserved seating). In addition to reserving a table, you can get general admission "standing room" only tickets. This was ridiculous, because whether you are seated or standing, it's a bad deal. There's very few places to stand where you are not standing in the way of the servers or other patrons. I saw many people have to readjust where they were standing multiple times. Personally, I would only go here if I had a reserved seat.

I was here in March 2013 - and I don't want to call out the name of the group performing, because they were good and clearly put a lot of hard work in. But, it wasn't great, soul stirring jazz for me. It was good though, so if you want some live jazz in Portland, this is a contender.

“Definitely one to come back to”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 26, 2013

The music is awesome, the food is succulent and mouthwatering, drinks are reasonable. Had an awesome night here and I was impressed by the artists painting tonight and doing a great job with an inspirational music like this. Thanks a lot!!!!

“Great jazz”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 25, 2013

We ended up at Jimmy Mak's both nights we were in Portland. Both nights featured Mel Brown on drums, but with totally different other performers - both great sound. You don't go to a jazz club for gourmet food, but the food is fine and the service was good. The kitchen is open late, so you can catch a late jazz set and a late meal, if need be.
