“A hotel with a great personality and awesome service.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 31, 2014

Smack in the middle of downtown Portland, this hotel has terrific ambiance and incredibly helpful concierges with a sense of humor and excellent recommendations for local sites and shopping. You're steps away from amazing food trucks, great coffee shops, and fabulous restaurants. How can you not love a hotel with a "make it so" button, one that even offers to deliver a pint of Salt & Straw ice cream to your door? We'll be back!

I am so pleased to know that our staff was able to direct you to so many fun and amazing things while you were with us. The fact that they were able to do this while maintaining a sense of humor is a bonus for which I am personally very grateful. You are here to have fun, and it appears that you did.

Again, thanks for the kind words and recommendation. Both are appreciated as is your business.

I recently stayed here for a couple nights with my husband and we loved the hotel - the lobby has a historic and elegant feel with a great scent circulating! The rooms feel very boutique with dark colored walls, and a very modern-vintage vibe. There are no mini-fridges in the standard room which is a bit strange for the class of the hotel. The front desk was very friendly, however it seemed they were still trying to get some things figured out.

The one big downside was the insanely loud bar/club right next to the lobby (it is part of the hotel and completely open to the lobby). If you are expecting to come back to a quiet and peaceful lobby to perhaps enjoy a cocktail or glass of wine and read a book (which my husband and I love doing in lobbies), you will be disappointed. On a friday and saturday night, it is extremely loud. We thought we'd be okay in our room, but we could still hear the faint sound of music and bass. This is definitely an issue for hotel guests and something Sentinel will have to figure out. It didn't dampen our stay that much, and I'd stay again, but I would for sure ask for a room higher up and on the opposite end of the hotel to avoid the noise. At one point I called down to the desk and asked when the music would stop and they just said "2am" without any apologies. A way to compensate for this would be perhaps to offer guests free drinks or something at the bar.

Regardless of the loud club next door, it is a great hotel, and we were able to walk everywhere. It is also across the street from some amazing street food. One tip - skip the $36 valet fee and park in the city/church garage a couple blocks away (the hotel will tell you where it is at). We ended up paying $10 a day to park there.

Room Tip: Ask to be a higher level as far from the lobby as possible to avoid the loud noise from the club at...

Thank you for your honest feedback and positive review. Thank you also for your comments regarding our lobby bar. We understand, it can get a little loud from time to time. The lobby bar has quickly become a popular downtown spot for both locals and out of towners. A visit to downtown Portland isn't complete without a stop to Jackknife. Of course, we will continue to address your concerns regarding noise.

We look forward to having you with us again should your future plans include a trip to Portland.

This hotel, formerly the Governor, is, to us, a first class hotel. As a result, it is a bit pricey, but worth it. I has the charm of a turn-of-the century hotel and one can almost sense the life from past years. The folks at the desk were very friendly and helpful. Our room happened to be on the northeast corner, and we could see and hear the street activity (it was saturday night). Parking, as is true in most cities, was by valet, and there was an extra fee. The hotel was within walking distance of the famous Powell Bookstore.

Room Tip: The noise level was a bit high until the saxophone player on the street went home about 11pm, Woul...

The hotel has a rich history, and is in a great location. It has been renovated, and the lobby is much better and more accessbile. Rooms are perfectly lovely, with all the amenities. Teh only downside is a very, very loud bar scene in the area that used to be the reception desk--but it seems just to be a weekend phenomena.

Room Tip: Make sure you are above the second floor, and not on the north side--because the kitchen for Jake...

My husband and I just moved out of the Sentinel Hotel after 3 AMAZING months-- once our home repairs were completed. And looking back.... we have nothing but great memories of our stay there. What a quality team of professionals from top to bottom. Front Office Manager Dave Fry sets the standard high and the whole team delivers, hour after hour... day after day-- with amazing warmth, cheer and always a smile. It's no accident that every aspect of this hotel is top notch! We were unflinchingly treated like royalty, no matter what our request.... along with so many gestures of thoughtfulness before we even thought to ask! We heartily recommend this hotel without the slightest hesitation. It's home away from home at its best!!

Thank you for your kind words. We will share them with the entire team who will appreciate knowing that you felt so cared for. We truly appreciated your business but, most importantly, we appreciate you allowing us to serve you. Being out of your home isn't easy. We are pleased to hear that this difficult time was made somewhat easier by the warmth and graciousness of Team Sentinel.

Good luck as you settle back into things and again, our sincere thanks.

Respectfully,

I think they just renovated the hotel but I loved the decor. They have these awesome blown up black & white pics in the hallway of old stars. The rooms were super comfortable and pretty spacious. The customer service was great. It's also a great location. Didn't use the car at all when I was there. I had absolutely no issues.

The hotel has been completely refurbished and gives a very trendy vibe. We had a suite on the sixth floor which was fairly large but quirkily shaped and laid out e.g. there was a large window from our seating area out to the common hallway, presumably to get light in from the glass roofed hallway. Fixtures and fittings are high end and tastefully done. Our friends in a different suite did find the A/C loud. Service was friendly and efficient. Valet parking is available but is $36/night. The trendy bar/nightclub "Jacknife" adjoins the lobby and the noise level is disturbing at times in the lobby area. Hotel is two blocks from the trendy Pearl District and kitty corner to a large array of food trucks offering food from around the world.
