“Historic hotel with thoughtful, elegant updates will bring us back”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed yesterday NEW

We usually opt for renting apartments when traveling, but we were only in Portland for one night in July 2014 and we were pleased with our experience at the Sentinel. The historic building is wonderfully grand and the modern updates and furnishings are thoughtful, classy, and hip. The staff were pleasant and courteous, from valet to reception. We especially appreciated that they offered a code for free wifi and upgraded our room from a Deluxe Queen to a Deluxe King -- all hotels should do so when rooms are available. I appreciated that the windows cracked open for a little fresh air; that there was ample shelving space in the bathroom; and the beds were comfortable. The only demerit I'd give is that I would have appreciated having been offered a complimentary bottle of water upon check-in. Instead of getting price-gouged in the mini bar, I walked down the block to the drug store. Would definitely recommend and stay here again.

We stayed here for a trip to visit Portland and see some friends. The room was wonderful, clean and spacious. We had free parking and a $25 a night credit for food through a package we reserved. There is a starbucks connected to the hotel so it was easy to grab a quick coffee. The proximity to food carts and trucks is literally around the corner and the restaurants are pretty much within a block or two of this hotel. We were there when the Rose festival was going on and had a front row seat to the parade and ate at the grill. Would definitely stay there again.

Room Tip: Ask for a deluxe room if you can. It gets you a bi more room.

Upon arrival, the lobby is gorgeous and the historic character of the building has been maintained. The front desk attendant welcomed us and explained all of the services and amenities available. She also offered us a map of the city and showed us the locations of some places we had in mind to visit.

We were thrilled when we saw the room- it was on the 6th floor and had a deck overlooking the city. It was clean, and had an appealing decor. We chose a room with a king sized bed, which was very comfortable. I liked that there was a dedicated charge station for electronic devices on the table. There was also an iPod dock stereo. My wife also liked the Tocca toiletries in the room.

The location is great- you can walk pretty much anywhere in the downtown core, and there is a food cart pod within a block. There is also a Target store across the street (we could see it from the deck) if you need to pick up any basic items.

We ate at Jake's Grill on the first night, and we both enjoyed our food and cocktails. She had the Ciao Bella, and I had the Portland Street Car Martini- both delicious.

I later called the front desk after hours to request some food recommendations. The desk attendant recommended two places (Sizzle Pie and Cassidy's), both of which we tried during our trip and were happy with both.

We loved the city, so we will return to Portland and when we do, the Sentinel will be our preferred hotel choice.

We were part of a large wedding party that stayed at this hotel for a couple of days to make it more convenient to attend the three events that were hosted in their ballrooms. The room we had was reasonably big enough for the family, except all the great furniture in it made it seem a bit too crowded. Bathroom was a bit on the small side as well. The beds were awesome. The staff was quite courteous. Location is great -- close to Powell's bookstore :-), close to the Rose Garden, as well as the SW side of downtown with the high-end shops. Nice restaurants and a LOT of food trucks within a block of it makes it a great location for foodies too.

On the downside, there is only one elevator servicing the floors on the side of the hotel where most of the rooms are. Sometimes the wait times were too long. And there is no swimming pool, much to the disappointment of the kids.

This is a beautiful historic hotel with a great location for experiencing downtown Portland. The architecture is classic with modern touches that add both northwest and Hollywood vibes. Fairly well integrated modern conveniences on site include a Starbucks and a lively night club that we did not hear once the elevator doors closed.
My wife "loved" the clean green doors that lead to spacious rooms compared to most other city hotel rooms, along with comfortable beds. All of the staff were professional, friendly, and prompt with any question although we never found ourselves in need of any special requests which I believe says a lot.

From the minute we arrived at the Sentinel, we had outstanding customer service. The friendly and professional staff made our stay one of the best in all our travels. The rooms were nicely appointed and the proximity to downtown venues make this a hotel I would highly recommend.

Booked this hotel through Rocketmiles, sight unseen. When we arrived the hotel clerk was very friendly and upgraded our standard room to a corner fireplace room for $40. The room was not clean yet, and she told us it would be about an hour. We returned 2 hours later and the room still wasnt ready. We waited another half hour in the lobby and when the room still wasnt ready she apoligized profusely and upgraded us to a top floor corner suite with verandah ovelooking the city (normally $600 a night!). The room and view were great. Bed was super comfy and with an 80 degree weekend in Portland the verandah was awesome. We were a little disappointed that there was no pool, but the gym more than made up for it! We are used to minimalist hotel gyms with a crummy treadmill and a universal gym from the 80's, this gym was replete with 10+ machines in good condition, 6 cardio machines and even some free weights.
