We've been to a few McMenamins and have really enjoyed ourselves. I had high hopes for Kennedy School too, as I love visiting Portland. What a disappointment!
The concept, as usual, is clever and fun...old classrooms with chalkboards, etc. Certainly didn't miss having a tv. However, the room we got (Myrtle Room) had only a very loud space heater to warm it. Once we turned off the space heater, the traffic noise was incredibly loud. If you value your sleep, DO NOT accept a room facing the main street!!!
All McMenamins have interesting art work everywhere. This one's seem to be in dire need of cleaning.
Another problem is that it is located very far from anything else. The literature in the room said that the "avant garde" Alberta Street stores and cafes were just around the corner, so we opted to walk there, thinking we could get dinner and window shop a bit. We walked and walked...finally arriving at the area we think they were talking about, but all shops but one were closed (7PM), and the amount of graffiti everywhere was unsettlling.
So we walked back to the hotel and waited about 45 minutes to get a table there. During our wait, there were five barefoot children running up and down the hall, kicking beach balls at people and rolling marbles down the hallway. My daughter looked at that whole experience as pretty effective birth control. I understand that child-rearing is not a hotel's responsibility, but managing the environment is....
All-in-all, our experience at this location was that it was hard work to stay there, instead of a relaxing time.
While I would definitely recommend McMenamins establishments in general (especially St Francis School in Bend, OR.) , I can't, in good conscience, recommend this one.
