After a great walk on 23rd St. I did a bit of shopping, always enjoying Urban Outfitters’ overprized odd items; I purchased a new phone case. I couldn’t decide what to eat and I stumbled upon Rams Head, one of the McMenamins restaurants in Portland. I have been to many of their restaurants in Oregon and so far so good, but yesterday… I was not impressed at all. There has to be a point where even if the wait staff is amiable that doesn’t justify the slowness of the service overall. I waited a long time for three items in their Happy Hour menu: 1. Coffee-roasted duck carnitas taco orange & fire-roasted chili salsa. I am a duck lover, as I have mentioned before numerous times and though I recognize that it’s not an easy protein to cook (you have to get the temperature and time just right) it should really not be such a challenge for our local chefs. The flavor worked really nicely especially with the touch of sour cream on the top, however the duck was dry, very dry. 2. My second choice was a Red cooked pork belly slider brioche bun, spicy slaw. What a bad miss with this one! The flavors where great but I could not get a bite out of the pork, it was so hard I stopped trying. Really? hard dry pork? And my last choice was a Bombay tuna salad slider, which was the only item I actually finished eating. It seems to me that the chef needs help teaching kitchen staff how to cook protein because they are way off. I was in a lalala mood listening to a National Geographic article on monkeys that make love not war, otherwise I would have sent back the pork slider and complained about the slowness of the service. It’s a no go for me.
