Kennedy School is old hat now, but it's important to remember what a marvel it was when it opened -- and still is to people from many other parts of the country. A nearly 100 year old school was painstakingly restored with tons of art everywhere, classrooms converted to guest rooms and bars. There's an outdoor soaking pool surrounded by tiki torches, an auditorium filled with overstuffed furniture where you can watch $2 movies, three different bars, and a large restaurant/pub space with a huge area of outdoor seating (weather permitting, which it usually does during the summer tourist season).
The food, beer, wine and spirits are far from spectacular, but they are decent and they are consistent with the other McMenamins. A big draw for us is that they offer Oregon Country beef (free-range, no endocrine-disrupting growth hormones or MRSA-breeding antibiotics) and, important for me because I am gluten intolerant, gluten-free buns. The fries are soggy but skin-on and tasty, the burgers are unspectacular but perfectly fine, there's good draft root beer on tap, and they make the beer, wine and spirits themselves. As long as you're not too snooty, it's hard not to like this place.
