“Dessert ONLY!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed November 22, 2012

We had plans to eat dinner elsewhere, but the spot was closed because it was the night before Thanksgiving, so we walked on down the street to this restaurant instead. We four ordered off what seemed a very limited menu. Two had the coq au vin and two had the braised short ribs with pasta. The chicken was tasty, but very small portions. The short rib dish came in a big bowl that was 80% inedible, overcooked pasta topped with five bite size pieces of dried out beef. Horrible! However, when the server brought the dessert menu, it was four pages long and the light bulb went on: this is a place Portland folk go for dessert, NOT dinner food!! The desserts were OK.."store bought", not homemade, by the taste of them. Won't ever try it again for dinner OR dessert!

“so so food”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed November 21, 2012

My wife and I decided to go back to Papa Hayden and try again hoping the food is better this time after probably 10 or more years away. We are neighbors there and have stayed away after the first try was pretty bad. Last night, 11/20/12 , we went back and ordered chicken and pasta and we were very disappointed. The braised chicken was rather tastless, cold, and my wife did not like her pasta either.
We did complain this to our pleasant server and she said she would talk to the cook. Also, it took a little long while to get the food and we thought they must be preparing the food fesh from the skretch. How wrong we were! We did not feel so good as we were leaving the place and the mood was unchanged even after we came home. We usually don't go back after this kind of experience.

“Trying a little too hard”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 18, 2012

My latest trip here was for lunch. I ordered a "strata" and probably should have asked more about it, as I assumed it was something layered and that it had most vegetables. In fact, it was mostly bread. Since it was not on the menu, the waiter should have explained more about it. The dish itself was uninspiring, rather dry and bland.

Papa Haydn is a longtime fixture, especially for the older hipsters and ladies who lunch. But unless one is really seeking dessert, there are probably better lunch choices in the area.

“Go for Dessert!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 18, 2012

This is one of a handful of late-night dessert places in Portland that people rave about. Go. Indulge. Anything from seasonal pies, to pavlova (light and yummy) and dee-lish layer cakes - chocolate, lemon, coconut, carrot...fine place to impress your out of town friends or sweetheart! The vibe is just cool and hip on 23rd anyway. You won't be disappointed!
