I live in Seattle, and needed to travel down to visit a client for a dinner mid-week. Not sure what was going on, but all the hotels in the area were around the price that Hotel Lucia was (and they weren't that nice). So, I decided to stay at a boutique vs. a rewards points based hotel and give it a try. I almost stayed at the Hotel DeLuxe down near the Pearl, but I'd already stayed there before (and they're rooms were super small/plus lots of noise/no view of anything).
The Hotel Lucia *upgraded* me to a corner king room that had a view of the street. The bed, at first, seemed pretty comfortable. By the end of the night, I was ready to sleep in the chair or the floor.
The pillows were extra large King Sized pillows. Normally, bigger is better right? Not in this case. My neck is still sore :( One pillow was way too flat and the other was way to stiff. I could never get comfortable.
I'm very picky as far as beds go, though (and I realize this). Let me also note that we have a Sterns & Foster Uber Deluxe Pillow Top at home, and the only bed that has been *better* than my bed at home was at the Kahala Hotel in Oahu.
On the surface, the hotel seemed very nice. Pictures of celebrities in black/white on the walls (Seinfeld, not the 40's and 50's like Hotel DeLuxe has). The room numbers are in a cool art deco font, I was in love with the wood and trim in the hallways. The hotel staff was very helpful and always smiling. I did feel like the guys in front were always fishing for tips. Is the hotel business down that much in Portland?
Like another reviewer, I was very turned off that Hotel Lucia nickle and dimes you for everything. I am having to pay for my valet myself ($35), because it was my only option and my company will not reimburse me for valet at a hotel. This stinks, and I'm not happy about it. However, the only other option was the garage across the street for about as much because they charge you by the hour.
Why isn't internet included in hotel rates? Especially at boutique hotels that can offer this as a *perk* to their guests to take away business from the big brands with rewards points programs? This still baffles me-it's 2012.
Lastly, they are located in Downtown Portland. Normally, you would *think* this would be great because you have access to shops/restaurants, etc. I didn't feel safe walking around the streets after dark. At. All. Lots of homeless people that were very agressive. It's really a problem there. And, I am originally from Atlanta.. trust me. I know what issues are in a city. While this isn't the Hotel Lucia's fault, if you're a woman traveling alone you should make yourself aware of this.
I'm honestly at a loss of where to stay in Portland the next time I have a business trip. I did stay near the airport in July (at the Hyatt Place), and their new development out there with shops and multiple chain hotels is actually pretty nice (and seemingly safer than downtown Portland).
