4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 1, 2013

I can really only second all the positives other guests are saying in recent reviews. We were so happy to find this gem of a neighborhood hotel for our visit to Portland. I loved having a kitchen and there is a Trader Joe's a few blocks away for stocking up on snacks. We rode public transport or walked everywhere we wanted to go for most of our stay. The location is great--with plenty of great restaurants and coffee shops within the surrounding blocks. We had room 315 on the back side--it was very quiet. Room was very clean. Staff was helpful and patient (!) with directions getting around town.
Only 2 minor potential negatives--the floor in our room was pretty creaky--I wondered if it was bothering the people below us--though it didn't bother me. And there is a really odd smell in the public areas (though not the room itself) that is reminiscent of a veterinarian's office--perhaps the cleaning supplies they use? Not really a big deal since you only walk through those areas--just FYI if you have a super sensitive sniffer. The room didn't smell that way though--it was fine. Would definitely stay here again next time we are in Portland!

Room Tip: Streetcar runs on the side with even numbered rooms--odd numbered rooms are over the back parking lo...

Booked this hotel after all the good reviews on Trip Advisor and really glad we did. We could walk everywhere we wanted to and then get the streetcar back at the end of a long day. The free parking was a real bonus as well.

The staff were helpful, the breakfast basic but good and having the little mini kitchen was helpful although we only used the fridge as there were so many good places to eat nearby.

We had a front facing room but the noise from the road wasn't a problem and we had breakfast on our balcony most mornings as the breakfast room was full.

I would definitely stay here again rather than downtown.

Much has been said of the Inn at Northrup Station but I will add my two cents anyway. This hotel is a colorful renovation of an old apartment building that is comfortable and complete. Each room has a kitchen with full-size appliances, a kitchen bar, a desk and two flat screen TVs. A large TV in the dining and living area, and a small TV in the bed area. The rooms also have a king bed and sleep sofa or two queen beds. The bathroom is standard and adequate.

The hotel common area includes an ongoing supply of coffee, tea, fruit, and colorful candies - starbursts or taffy. The hotel also has a streetcar stop near its front door to take passengers to Portland's fun downtown area. The Inn, the only hotel in the area, also is adjacent to an upcoming and significant dining and shopping area.

Staff are friendly and knowledgable. Always a pleasant place to stay.

Room Tip: Rooms either face the street or the parking lot. This is mainly a residential area. Streetcars run...

Great location. Great customer service. Everything positive is true. We loved Portland, everyone was friendly and helpful. Northrup Station exceeded our expectations. Highly recommend. We walked, we drove and took the metro line. Perfect location for our family.

Room Tip: Family suite.

This was my first trip to Portland. I picked the Inn at Northrup Station based on the location, being near the streetcar line, plus the free parking. I was not disappointed. The room was bright and cheery and having the full kitchen was a nice touch. My room was on the parking lot side, not the street side, so the streetcar noise did not bother me. It was super handy to walk out the door and hop on the streetcar to get downtown. The complimentary breakfast is standard; the make your own waffle station is a nice touch. The complimentary wine tasting on Wednesday night was also a nice touch.

I just returned from Portland and the Oregon Coast. I LOVED the Inn at Northrup Station! We had been online and knew that the boutique hotel was colorful and funky, but neither the website or brochure could have measured up to the reality of the Inn! The furnishings are whimsical and so colorful in the public room as well as the bedroom suites. So nice to have the full kitchenette available as well. The bed was, without a doubt, the most comfortable bed I have ever slept on. We found on checking out that the beds are custom made for the Inn and not available for purchase, darn it! We took advantage of the rooftop area to have morning coffee or wine after returning from our meetings. The location was terrific too! Close to the "trendy-third" district, with its restaurants and boutiques, and right on the trolley line which connects to the train and onto the Convention Center. I would most definitely return to the city of Portland and to the Inn at Northrup Station.

My wife and I booked the Inn at Northrup as part of our trans-US road trip based upon the numerous glowing reviews here upon Tripadvisor, and in many ways once you have been there you can see why it has received these reviews.
- the decor is straight out of a paint supplier's catalogue, very bright and vibrant colours.
- the furniture is equally funky matching the colour schemes.
- the rooms are relatively well equipped.
- the location is excellent for the Portland Street Car service, dropping you off right out the front door.
- the location is in an area with a very good 'vibe'.

The stay we had planned was to be one of the highlights of the trip. However, maybe we just managed to catch the Inn on one of their down days, but we left disappointed, questioning the value of what we had received. Our stay was between July 16 - 18, 2013 and I'll state that I raised these issues with the hotel in the feedback form so I'm not blindsiding them now.

As was stated in a previous review by paul518, the wifi was abysmal. In the two days we were there we were unable to get any sort of reliable connection within the room (room 205) on any of my wifi devices. The only strong connection I could get was to stand in the business centre, but the speed was so slow as to question why I was bothering. We gave up and went into Powell's Bookstore to use their free wifi to do our internet banking etc..

Although we had limited interaction with the site staff, when we did the attitude that both my wife and myself received felt dismissive, with little concern for the issues raised. Taking the above issue as an example, the front desk staff were very quick to pass me off to a third party tech support, without any subsequent follow-up to see if the issue had been resolved.

If you have experienced the complementary breakfasts that seem to be the norm of a lot of the US hotels/motels nowadays, the complimentary breakfast offered at the Inn is significantly limited. In addition, I'm sorry to say, on the days we experienced it there were also issues with the quality of the food provided, with such items as the bagels appearing to be quite stale as an example.

The balcony also became an issue for us. It was indicated that this was part of the room package we had reserved and we had planned to adsorb some of the local atmosphere sitting on the balcony watching the world go by, however the room allocation precluded this. Rooms ending in an odd number are at the rear of the building and face nothing more than the car park and neighbouring business' and houses' back yards. There is not much atmosphere to soak up there unless you like the smell of hot bitumen and being blasted by the equally hot exhaust of your and your neighbour's air conditioning. If you want to do this you need to get an even numbered room. The balconies also are neither even modest in size (about 3 m x 1 m) nor equipped with any furniture so what purpose they serve is limited. Here’s a tip we learned after the fact, if you’re wanting to sit outside and soak up the atmosphere, book a ground floor room with the outdoor patio.

Maybe, I’m being picky here and quite contrary to most of the reviews on here, but it’s the little things that make the difference between an average stay and a great stay and from our experience we were left wanting.
