“Beware of construction site across the street”

Paramount Hotel

Jul 23, 2008

Just returned from a business trip to Portland, and spent 3 nights at the Paramount Hotel. Overall I would say the hotel is average---nothing bad, but nothing to really distinguish itself from the other hotels in the area.

The most important issue right now that the hotel has no control over is the huge construction site that is directly across the street from the hotel. Noise was not a problem on the weekend when we arrived, but on Monday morning, the noise starts by 7:30am. It wasn't a problem for us, since we were getting ready for business meetings, but don't expect to sleep in on weekdays. Also, don't expect the construction to be done any time soon. It appeared to be just beginning, and could be an issue at this hotel for months.

Our room had 2 queen beds. The beds were comfortable, the pillows were not. The linens and towels were thin and not the quality I've come to expect from hotels these days. I had read about jetted tubs, but our bathroom tub was standard. Overall, the room was a bit shabby in appearance with worn looking furniture, stained carpet, mildewy bathroom tile grout. Nothing to make me run, just enough to make me think the place needed to pay a little more attention to the details. And one of my pet peeves---highly perfumed room deodorizer that seemed to be used daily.

That said, the staff was very friendly and offered help and good suggestions when requested. Our room was modest but reasonably priced, clean and comfortable. I do recommend the Dragonfish happy hour----great sushi prices and and fun place!

“There's Better”

Paramount Hotel

I've stayed at several downtown properties in Portland and very was disappointed in the Paramount. The Executive room was depressingly minimal. The bed was extremely hard and low to the floor. The nice design appointments were just missing making the room feel banal and stark. Bedside lamps were plugged into outlets several feet away from the nightstand so the cords were stretched along the wall. I found the staff polite, but not overly friendly. The Dragonfish restaurant food was excellent; however the hostess insisted I sit in a table I didn't want. For the money, there are much nicer hotels that offer similar access to shopping and dining.

“Loved the Paramount - and dowtown Portland”

Just spent a night at the Paramount while checking out Reed College. Beautiful hotel, great location, excellent service. We had a corner room which was quite large, and had two windows with nice views of downtown! Very peaceful and quiet too. Bed was extremely comfortable - slept soundly which I do not usually do at hotels. Front desk staff called a few minutes after checking in to see if everything was satisfactory (which it was, but appreciated the call). Staff was friendly and professional. Concierge very helpful. Loved the big tub and walk-in-shower. Only thing we did not like is that they charged $9.95 for wireless internet in your room. These days, that is offered free at so many hotels and it seems that if they HAVE IT, they should let you use it for free. Especially a hotel of this caliber - which is IMHO definitely a 4-star hotel. There is a sushi restaurant and lounge downstairs which we did not try, but it looked appealing and popular. We did eat at the Pastini Italian restaurant across the street, which was absolutely delicious and reasonably priced - even had a huge selection of vegetarian entrees. Walked all over downtown - lots of interesting eateries and shops including Powell Books, and Ten Thousand Villages. Movie theatre across the street from hotel too. So much to see, wonderful hotel to retreat to in Portland. Only wish we could have stayed longer at Paramount.

“Aimed to Please”

Paramount Hotel

This was my second stay at The Paramount and I think it has improved since my last stay in 2007. I booked my room directly with the hotel and the agent was very accommodating. I was able to check in early before 1 p.m. and the front desk delivered bath robes upon our request. The location is excellent just a block away from the streetcar that takes you to the Pearl District which has a plethora of highly-rated restaurants and swanky nightclubs. We all had an enjoyable and pleasant stay at The Paramount. Before spending the extra money please note that the deluxe queen room was just as nice and roomy than the deluxe king room with a balcony.

“Noisy location, lousy beds....DO NOT STAY AT THIS HOTEL!!”

I stayed here for work and initially requested a king non-smoking. The first mistake was booking me in a room with 2 queen beds. The hotel wasn't exactly busy, so what gives? They apologize, then book me into a King room...................handicapped. So I suggested to the girl at the desk "You should let your customers know up front what they are getting before sending up 4 floors to a nice surprise." Her response: "Oh, it is only my 4th day, I can't read the codes on the screen very well." So she is un-supervised, running the desk and doesn't know what is going on?" GREAT SERVICE PARAMOUNT!! GREAT JOB!!

Finally, after sleeping in a Motel 6 bed on the 4th floor, there is a lot of construction happening outside across the street, not to mention trash trucks emptying commercial-size bins at 4AM. Not a good nights sleep and a busy day the next day.

With the exception of the bellman that assisted us to our room, DO NOT STAY HERE. MASSIVE CONSTRUCTION ACROSS THE STREET. VERY NOISY AT NIGHT AND THE ROOMS ARE 2-STAR ROOMS AT BEST. This is not a 4-star hotel. I repeat, this is not a 4-star hotel.
