“Peaceful Oasis”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 22, 2012

Our second visit to Lan Su. Even more beautiful after a light rain with water droplets on the leaves. Busy but not crowded on a Saturday. Do stop in to the tea house. Very special. The rock formations brought from China (500 tons worth!) really create scenes you find in gardens in China. Great photo ops. Easy walk to the Pearl District and Downtown. Plan on spending at least two hours.

“Beautiful though not perhaps quite as relaxing as it should be !”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 20, 2012

The Lan Su Chinese Garden is a little haven in this bustling city but sadly the hustle and bustle does manage to penetrate a little too easily in terms of noise and the occasion glimpses of traffic captured through windows. The location I feel does not lend itself to a classic Chinese Garden , it really ought to be somewhere a little more serene.

That said the garden is beautiful and so are the various pavilions and though it is fairly compact there is still enough to keep your eyes and mind occupied for a while.

Unlike a Japanese Garden where the Architecture is subtle and understated and there only as an "accessory" to the natural surroundings, blending into it with grace and reserve, the Chinese Garden very much seems to revolve around the Buildings with the flora an adjunct to it , compliementing the build environment which is why I suppose I personally prefer the Japanese style.

The Pavilions are beautiful and the exhibits within were interesting and there are interesting vistas from all of them , over bridges and water features.

I must admit the Tea House was the truly memorable aspect of the garden for us, a delightfully tranquil place with lovely views in which to have traditional Chinese Teas served ( and what a magnificent selection) and a good place to rest and contemplate life .

A very enjoyable and beautiful place, shame about the urban location though. :)

3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 18, 2012

Went on a half price day in fall and it was beautiful. About an hour to see everything but whats there is nice. They also got special events and Im wanting to visit for something special. Wish it was free but thats how she goes. Easy to get around, clean, good for picture taking or family friendly activity

“A Gem”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 18, 2012

All the advertising said visit the Japanese garden--we did. Then we decided to have lunch at china town--very good it was too. When we left the restaurant we came across this garden.
In our opinion it is far superior to the Japanese garden--guided tours are available and the plants are incredible. We really are glad we "found" this place. It really is worth a visit.

“Lovely garden and excellent guide.”

We didn't intend to take the guided tour of this hidden gem, but one was starting so we did. It was excellent and really enhanced our experience
